Ardour headache

Post by Gps »

How do I use the lv2 plugin, red zeppelin in Ardour?

Can't find anything usefull in the manual.

From the start I started an advance session.

But then I am totally lost, how to continue?

One vid seems to point at me having to record something? :?

Maybe I looked at the wrong place in the manual ?

Add a midi track, the drumkit should be available as instrument.

Baby steps, after creating a second midi track, were I picked the drum kit under the midi track set up, I had the drumkit loaded.
I even managed to put in 5 midi notes. :D

What happened when I tried to listen to it, did not surprise me.

No sound.

Maybe I need to watch unfa's vid about midi and ardour again.

It could also be I just need to read the manual, from the start taking no short cuts.
Accept that the manual will also tell me a lot I already know.

Never give up never surrender.

The file name is, whenthelevee

There's a possibility you entered some MIDI notes that are not existing in the playable map of RedZed kit, for that WtheLevee song you'll essentially need these notes:
36 Kick
38 SnareCenter
42 CHH
57 Crash2
First check the you have some of these which should produce some sort of sound ;)

Besides you can also open the RedZep plugin GUI and check that when clicking on various instruments of the kit you get them sound and safe, though caution 'cause you may get addicted for it's kinda exhilarating. If you don't get any sound doing so then you'll know that the trouble is in the sound chain of that session, if you get some sound then it was a simple pebcak, solved ;)

Thank you and I will have a look at it.

I do hope its a pebcak error.

For now I am totally hating Ardour. Nothing seems to work in a way I am expecting it.

But first lets focus on why I am not seeing the RedZep plugin GUI.

I also hope this feeling about Ardour will go away soon, because I still think its a great program.

I also tried qpwgraph, but that only confused me more. I did not see my focus solo in there.
Yet in audio setup in ardour, my focus is listed as output device.

To end positive, I am starting to understand the gui a bit, how to switch between the mixer view and the time line of the track.
Click the edit button......
Baby steps, never surrender.

KDE is driving me nuts too. The focus is set as the default device in kde and Alsa, yet when I quit Ardour, opensuse/kde seems to decide I want to use hdmi audio. :?

I hate computers

Edit: When I click the notes in the piano roll, I see the vu meter move, which points to a pebcak error.

Yeah, try that with two mice! And a drink so you see two pointers.

This makes me wonder, if I need a midi drumkit. 8)

Are there any opensuse users here, who do have the gui of that drum kit showing?

I am totally confused if I am doing something wrong or this is an compile issue?

I can see the GUI fine, I am using the official ardour binary though rather than one from a opensuse repo.

I assume you still speak about the LedZeppelin Drumkit
1) you create a new midi track and in the pop-up window you choose LedZeppelin as the "Instrument"
2) if LedZep doesn't show among the midi Instruments, rescan for plugins
(the menu bar -> Window -> Preferences -> Show ;
then in the Preferences click on Plugins -> first entry is "Scan for plugins"

3) Once you added the midi track with LedZep as Instruments, you can play the different sounds like bass-drum, snare, so forth in the pianoroll of that track. If the pianoroll doesn't show, make the track more big, then it should show. Instruments for a drumkit start on C2 , the second lowest C note to be found on the pianoroll.
4) You can open the Gui pop-up for any or most Instruments of a midi track by:
4.1) Shortcut "Shift+E" to show the mixer strip on the left side
4.2) in the Editor-Mixer on the left side click on the "plugin" with the name, the one above the "Fader". (in my case the instrument-plugin is in red, the fader is in blue).

I am not too familiar with the correct words. I hope it may help a bit.
Best might really be to watch the video by unfa, the one you mentioned (big MIdi tutorial, or such).
Good luck.

You are helping, and maybe my problem is that I am trying to do things the LMMS way.

I am gonna watch that UNFA vid again, It will be the third time. Maybe I am gonna make notes this time about shortcuts.

I also just had another try, and noticed the vu meter on the plugin is moving, but the vu meter on the master channel does nothing.
So the plugin is not routed to the master bus.

I did find a setting which claims this should go automatically.
I will try to change this to manual.

For now Ardour is beyond frustrating, but never give up never surrender.
One reason is when I have an issue, I try to google it, but not ones this let to a useful answer.

I will how ever not rest until the drums from When the levee breaks, are coming out of Ardour. (and the red zeppelin plugin)
Then next to try is stochas.

If others want the UNFA vid:

First thing which comes to mind is which soundserver you use?
(in general, and which one for ardour).
This way or that way i try to change it in ardour
menu -> Window -> Audio/Midi setup (for a running session, for a new one pick the option you didn't pick yet).

(as far i understand the ardour IRC channel usually recommend to just use alsa, but you won't be able to do other audio things then. I usually use jack, for a few minor reasons).
