stochas not working

Post by Gps »

I installed Stochas on openSUSE but its not working.

@Kott

Should I bother Kott about this.

In yast I saw he made the package. :)

I cant find it under programs, and when I type stochas on the commandline, it says command not found.

Problem solved, for the most part. it was an user error.

Its Stochas, capital S. :oops:

I might have to uninstall jack, because I get errors when I start Stochas.

Code: Select all

Stochas
Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory
Cannot connect to server request channel
jack server is not running or cannot be started
JackShmReadWritePtr::~JackShmReadWritePtr - Init not done for -1, skipping unlock
JackShmReadWritePtr::~JackShmReadWritePtr - Init not done for -1, skipping unlock

No need. Those "errors" appear when Jack's not running. Bit weird though, since you get these messages even with Alsa selected for audio device type in Stochas' settings. And that's also weird for a midi application, to have to choose an audio device and playback server in the first place!

Anyway, Jack running or not, program seems to run fine, regardless of those messages. Can drive Pianoteq fine.

All errors are gone now. I had to install, pipewire-jack.

For others we need: jack-dbus, pipewire-jack, pipewire-libjack-0_3

I had a quick look with LMMS, and LMMS can't use Stochas yet.

But the poor LV2 support is one reason, why I am looking at Ardour. :)

The capital S baffled me for a bit too, that and the standalone doesn't make a menu entry.

Yes that also why I could not find it at first, no menu entry.

Only way at least on opensuse (kde), is to type the name, then you get an x server icon and text which says: execute Stochas.

You have to type the entire name. Just typing the first part of the name does not work, like it does for about all other programs.

Its almost easier to go to usr/bin, and there double click Stochas. :lol:

Most of such plugins in the proaudio repo doesn't have a Desktop entry. They just compiled as-is (with original filenames) with all possible formats and standalone version.
I think we can gradually add such desktop files when we have a time for that :)

Yeah, it seems you can't do much with midi at all in LMMS? (I ran the appimage, version 1.2.2)

It just got me by surprise.

Last night when thinking about it, it made me smile. I gave me a flashback of the ms dos days.

How to start autocad back then ? By typing its name.

Only after autocad had started, you had a GUI were you could use your mouse. :)

Just like Stochas.

I don't know how it works in OpenSUSE, but here, dropping custom .desktop files in ~/.local/share/applications makes them available in the menu. Example:

Code: Select all

[Desktop Entry]
Name=Schism Tracker
Exec=/home/devloop/Muziek/Schism\ Tracker/schismtracker
Type=Application
Icon=/home/devloop/.documents/Desktop_Icons/schism-icon-128.png
Terminal=false
Hidden=false
NoDisplay=false

Then I can pin it to the panel, and Schism Tracker is one click away.

I think LMMS is great as a midi editor, and or for creating midi files.

The plugin support how ever, that is were it lags badly.

You have to import a soundfount file to have any sound from a midi file in LMMS.

https://www.schristiancollins.com/generaluser.php

The problems I have with LMMS, it cant use most of the (Linux) plugins. And there is a groove quantitation request up for many years now.

The one thing that bothers me most, why does LMMS has a mac version.
Who on a mac needs LMMS? Now if you have a surplus of developers who cares, but progress on LMMS is beyond slow.
In the 80 ties Cubase had two versions. One for the Atari ST and one for MAC.
That is over freaking 30 years ago,
The pc's from that time could not handle anything like a daw.
Atari and Apple had a (internal) 32 bit CPU. Motorola 68000.

The idea behind LMMS was to have a daw on Linux, that why it name official means Linux Multi Media Studio.
But when LMMS started there was at least on Linux hardly anything else.
Only Rosegarden and Ardour were competitors, if I recall right.

Today the biggest problem LMMS faces is that there are many alternatives even on Linux.

LMMS is my favorite daw, and for me personal it can do 98% of the things I need.
But LV2 support is still work in progress, and I suspect this has to do with the goal of the lmms devs to be cross platform.
So they need to convert Linux plugins to windows....
That sounds to me like a lot of wasted effort.

Windows and mac users, already had and have a lot more options.

Then one of the LMMS devs added swing and strumming to LMMS, but his work got rejected.....

To end this small rant, Ardour here I come. :)

They do have one of the best* implementations for automation though, as far as I've seen. Too bad about the lack of plugin support. (If automating supported plugins can be done in the same way as automating their built-in instruments, I wouldn't know.)

Exactly.

First time I used LMMS I had noise coming from it instantly.
With Ardour, I did not get that far the first time.

Last week was watching an old UNFA vid. And he said he was missing the piano-roll in Ardour.

LMMS has a lot going for it, but lets call it unfinished.

At one time, I wanted to help the devs, so started to learn C.
Then I found out about the GUI part, and gave up.

LMMS can record knobs moving on midi hardware, in an automation track.

Carla in LMMS solves a lot of the plugins issues, but I would not call that user friendly.
Ones with the help of Carla had Amsynth running in LMMS, but we cant automate stuff we use in Carla in LMMS. :cry:

If only I was rich so I could hire a dev or two .....

I do not miss much in LMMS, and I cant sing, so thew fact lmms can't record audio is not relevant to me.

(Off course I can sing, but not in tune :wink: )

With vst its relative simple.
Find the knob in the alternative vst screen. (the one you get when clicking the wrench on vestige)
Then drag that knob into an automation track.

Synth 1 for example can be fully automated, over 90 knobs.

What usual does not work, is to try to drag a knob from the vst GUI into an automation track.

https://docs.lmms.io/user-manual/4-prod ... using-vsts

I do miss one detail, on Linux you will have to run the .exe with wine. :P

But synth1 works 100% in lmms (with wine)

I can use Stochas without Jack, without any problems.
I use it in Reaper in Linux Mint, with ALSA.

I think I installed Stochas via the release on this link:

Instagram, BandCamp, SoundCloud, Spotify, iTunes,....
