Only Cubase, Albeton and FL studio seem to have groove quantization, out of the box. ( I need to dig deeper in this, dont tell me there is no daw on Linux that can dot it :( )

Hydrogen has a "randomize velocity" option, and, also a "lead and lag" per-note control window where you can do some grooving. I don't see the point of the velocity randomization option as you can easily vary that yourself, but the lead-and-lag control is a very handy feature to have.

MusE has a "humanize" script where you can randomize velocity and timing.

I think ardour has it too. I am not too sure as i neither fully understand the thread nor those ardour options.
At least two things i know about:
1) in grab mode select a region, right click, in the opened menu choose name-of-track, the scroll down to "MIDI", then select Transform (there is several, not only velocity)
2) in internal edid mode, select the notes, righ click, either quantize or again "Transform" (quantize has swing too).

Though best is really to ask ardour (as said above: i don't fully understand).

Yeah randomize velocity is also in lmms quite simple. That is already something I do in LMMS.

Change one two three four into ONE two three four. With swing is were I start to struggle, I can't get it to sound right.
In theory is very simple move every second note, mostly on the hihats I think....

This thread is about two things. First and most important is how to sync midi with life played music.

I saw a vid from somebody with Cubase, he basically selected two regions, in two different tracks, and then Cubase matched those regions speed wise.

The other part is groove Quantization, this turns a computer beat into something that sounds like a drummer playing life.

I already found two things, both Reaper and LMMS have a request for this.

https://github.com/LMMS/lmms/pull/4232

Reaper does not seem to have it out of the box, but there plugins and scripts, who can do it.

https://forum.cockos.com/showthread.php?t=53180

Ardour might have it, but I have to figure that out. :)

It looks like ardour can do the speed matching part. :)

After you asked i looked in ardour, and found what i described.
To me it looks as if that would do what you ask for, but, that was my point, i am not too sure. (make it sound more "human").
I'd ask in #ardour or in their forum, as said.

Turns out Hydrogen has some more humanization controls on the master strip in the mixer. Never noticed that before :)

Paul Davis himself replied on the Ardour forum.

So this should fix the sync part. :)

Maybe some progress, on the groove part.

I found a post on an FL studio forum, the person asked for the best free groove templates.

The part were this gets interesting for us, those templates were in midi format.

I could not see any links though, because I am not registered to that forum.

Fingers crossed I understand this right, because then it should be as easy as just importing a midi file.

Midi does not have much data. Only velocity and position of the note are relevant for groove.

To be continued. :P

ardour now has "clips"
If you have an official ardour build, it contains "Ardour Bundled Content", which also has quite an amount of drum grooves (as midi files/format).
The Ardour Bundled Content is also available in the Ardour Demo Version
I for one can't say i like the drum grooves to be found there too much, but i didn't look at too many.
You can use the "clips" in the editor list (keyboard shortcut shift-L ) also to store self-written "templates" (or clips, if you like).

A quick example by dragging a few grooves from Ardour Bundled Content in the Editor LIst -> Clips into a track.
I didn't really did it quickly after searching some grooves i like at least a bit.
Just to give you the very first idea how it sounds and if it might be something you can work with.

On the image you see the "clips" by ardour bundle on the right side in the Editor LIst.

Thank you, and I will have a look, if have the bundled content.

I use geekos on opensuse, which is like the KX repositories for debian.

This repository gives me LMMS and Ardour.

Better working then the ones from the default repositories. Don't we love Linux.

Clips sounds exactly like what I need.

If I can see those files, which already have what I want, I can learn which drums to manipulate and how much. :)

I do not seem to have the bundled content.

As said: it is in the demo version.
$ ls /usr/share/ardour8/media/
click-120bpm.flac click.mid 'MIDI Beats' 'MIDI Chords' 'MIDI Progressions'
$

The paid version is well worth the price they want for it, i think most minimum was 1$, and i think it has a few other advantages too (but that is all stuff which is way beyond what i do, i only fiddle with a very few midi tracks all of them only a very few bars long).

If I am gonna use Ardour, I will definitely do a donation.

For now I still cant find the bundled content. Ardour 8, but I will investigate about why.

I did see midi maps though.

I found a page, and that actual does help me.

Its about Ableton Live, but there is enough info, to this in about any daw.

Off course Ableton Live has drop down menu's were you select the swing, but they also show some piano roll pictures.

Every second hi-hat is moved, probably 1/16 forward.

This makes those hihats sound late.

On the page is also the tip, to record your drums from your midi keyboard.

Been wondering about that for a long time, not that I can play well, but it will give instant humanization.

In lmms set the grid to 1/196 or 1/64.

I know my sense of rhythm is not bad.
Ones was doing the Cure - A Forest in LMMS.

The sheet music and LMMS drove me nearly insane.
I then hooked up my midi keyboard and by ear, timed that one bloody note.
Instant success.

Did notice a problem, if I want to pay for Ardour.
Paypall in my country basically wants you to have a 06 number. Last time I checked.
It wont accept a regular phone number, which some sites do.
You then get a phone call form a computer, which reads out the sms code.
