Yoshimi

Post by topmusik »

Hello there,
how can I use the Yoshimi Synth in MusE. I have Yoshimi already on my system but don't know how to get it into MusE.
Hope there is no compiling or such necessary.

It should already be in your lv2 plugin list

Did you compile Yoshimi yourself or use the distros version?
Some distros don't install the LV2 build, only the standalone.
If you self build, for LV2 you must install it, not just run it from the build image.
I don't use LV2 at all myself, but there are (or have been in the past) errors in the way LV2 hosts look for plugins. Some used to insist on them being located in '/usr/lib/lv2' whereas a proper linux location for home built ones should be /usr/local/lib/lv2' and LV2 hosts should take that as a priority. I don't know if that is now always done correctly.

From time to time I do test with Ardour, Muse, Qtractor and Carla. I'm not aware of any current problems.

I am using Yoshimi from here

on a Debian 12 system. Both the stand alone and the lv2 version (within Reaper for Linux) work well.

A great "Thank You!" to folderol and Hermann for their engagement! :D

Thanks for your support all.
I should mention that this latest feature came from Kristian, who is also one of the main devs.

Oh, and Lorenzo, who was the one who asked if something like this could be done, has quickly produced a demo using it :D

I am not really familiar with compiling at all. I think I used the distro version and this only by chance while searching for soltions "to get it into MusE".

... hm ... how do I install it and what is built image?

Is this regarding installation, or
do I get it with my used term like: sudo apt-get ....

never seen opus files beforehand  ... being litle bit overstrained

OK, from what you say I think it's best to find out what you actually have!
When you run Yoshimi standalone, what version does it report? You can find it in the Yoshimi->About window.
Also, open your file manager and step back through the directories to / then up to /usr then /lib (you'll find a lot of directories in there! look for /lv2
In a distro install you will usually find a Yoshimi directory there - is it there?

If it's not there, step back to /usr and then into /local and again into /lib and again into /lv2 if there isn't a Yoshimi directory there either, then the distro hasn't included it.

If it's in either of those locations you should be able to pick it up from Muse.

P.S.
What distro are you running? Is it debian based?

/usr/lib/lv2/ there is no Yoshimi available
/usr/local/lib/ no Yoshimi directory either

but I found it here:
/usr/share/yoshimi/presets
/usr/share/doc/yoshimi/
/usr/share/doc/yoshimi-data/
/usr/share/doc/yoshimi-doc/

What distro are you running?

Ubuntu Studio 20.04

Is it debian based?

how can I check this?

When you run Yoshimi standalone, what version does it report? You can find it in the Yoshimi->About window.

I was mistaken it is only in the snap store with version 1.7,0.1
is it useful to install it from there ?

Snap packages may install stuff in non-canonical (the irony:)) locations.

By the way, isn't one of the selling points of snap packaging that the developers keep it up to date with pushing automatic updates? Then it surprises me that the snap version available in Ubuntu Studio is 4 years old...

That is indeed a very old version. As you are on ubuntu one of "Yoshimi's little band of helpers" has provided a full set of PPAs

(the irony:)) locations.

i always try it like 'it is supposed to be' as a trustful but naive person, but somehow snap seemed strange to me all the time :)

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ichthyo/music
sudo apt update
so I have to type these lines in order to pick it then into MusE ?

I'm afraid I can't help you any further than that with PPAs. I've never used them and only know that they exist and that those who use them seems quite happy with them. Maybe someone else here is familiar with the process.

P.S.
The alternative is to grab the tarball and do a build yourself. That I could talk you through.

Re: Yoshimi

the commands did it ... but only when adding: sudo apt install yoshimi
so: I can start Yoshimi (Version 2.3.2) and in the directory
/usr/lib/lv2/yoshimi.lv2/
i find the files:
manifest.ttl
yoshimi.ttl
yoshimi:lv2.so
which leads me back to the start: how can I pick it up for MusE ?
