New MusE crash on big project.

Post by onefang »

I've been working on this song all year, and I've mentioned it in the past. There's a reggae festival next weekend that I was planning on it's first performance, and I was gonna get a lot of work done on it this weekend. Enough work to make it way less crap. lol

I'm using current git head of MusE 4.2.1 git: master | 4.2.1-1-gcb0bce73-dirty | 2023-09-25 00:23:55 -0400.

Last weekend I added the "16 bar blues #0" "16 bar blues #1" "16 bar blues #2" "16 bar blues #3" "16 bar blues #4" tracks, but left them empty. Today I cloned parts from the "12 bar blues" track, then dragged them around and cloned more parts to turn them into 16 bar blues variants. Saved it, but now it crashes when I open it.

I tried deleting those tracks in a text editor, still crashes.

Wish I had made a backup before I started today. Interesting the SetTheControlsForTheDrumAndTheBass_128_fluidyoshimi.med.backup is from June 4th, which would be before I updated to the current git head that I'm using. Ah I see that "Auto save" is turned off, might have fallen through the cracks when I updated since June.

The plan for this weekend was to create those 16 bar blues variants, listen to them, decide which I like best, then replace the bass parts that I didn't replace with the 12 bar blues variants last weekend.

Guess I'll have to wait until next years festival to play the much less crap version. lol

I have attached the file.

If I remove the "routing" section from the .med file, it doesn't crash when loading anymore.

That is, lines 35204-35811

Finer: 35220-35371 (edited ..72>..71)

An improvement, it now waits to show the description before crashing.

PROGRESS!

Hi.
Trying to replicate.
I am missing some of the plugins that you are using.
So the song loads OK here, so far, without those plugins.

One of them is Surge LV2.
According to your song, the URI of Surge in your song is:
https://surge-synthesizer.github.io/lv2/surge
But this does not exist any more.
Seems there is only Surge XT now?

So is the song using an older version of Surge (and therefore you have an older version of Surge installed)?
Whaddya got installed over there?

Thanks.
T.

I have Surge 5:1.7.1-1kxstudio1 (bionic) installed on my Devuan Chimaera system.

I'm partway through upgrading to Devuan Daedalus, but that'll take awhile as I'm doing it the hard way.

Edit: Devuan has such hard to spell names. lol

When I "remove" (read: rename) my plugin folders so MusE won't find any in the home folder, Onefang's project still crashes here on loading. The only plugins I've installed systemwide are the Calf plugins and Zynaddsubfx, and I see neither are used. Edit: and Carla.

Removing the routings lines from the project as specified before fixes the crashes.

@impostor Are you sure? Does this remove LV2, linuxVST and even ladspa?

The ones that are missing here are:
Surge LV2
LL-Scope (???)
Invada meter LV2
RubberBand-pitchshifter (LADSPA)

I'm having trouble building Surge 1.7.1
Still trying...

Thanks.

ll-scope -

an oscilloscope DSSI plugin

The Oscilloscope is a DSSI plugin with a GUI that displays the audio input in
an oscilloscope view. It can be useful when working with modular synths, to
view the waveforms with at different places in the synth graph.

It's rather ancient.

I could probably remove all of those the hard way, but I'm just guessing at what I'm doing when manually editing a .med file with a text editor.

I removed all of those except Surge from the .med file, didn't help. Surge I'm actually using for a bunch of instruments, so would be hard for me to remove since I have no idea what I'm doing. lol

Thanks for looking into this.

You can't just download it from KXStudio?

There are some (ladspa) plugins remaining on my system, but none of these is used in Onefang's project. After loading his project (having removed the routings) only MusE's own fluidsynth plugin is actually present in the project. And not removing the routings still leads to a crash (with an enlightening "segmentation fault (core dumped)" message).

The sun is up, it's Sunday, so the demolition crew next door wont be making very loud noises all day, and I should get some sleep.

Catch up with you later, and thanks again.

These lines seem to cause the crash. They all have <source track="10"/> in common. I have no idea what these lines mean though.
Lines 35252-35351:

Those are part of the lines you suggested I delete before, didn't help on my end, but maybe gives a clue to Tim.

I loaded it and the last backup from June into meld, then bit by bit merged the new stuff into the old stuff, loading the result into MusE as I went, to see what made it crash.

It was indeed one of the Surge instruments, one I no longer use. I still use other Surge instruments, including one I made myself.

I have attached the fixed version.

This time when I save and load it, no crashies. B-)

Note there was also a missing </part>, but that didn't seem to matter.

Now I can go back to editing my song, and add in that TapeDelay2 and stuff I figured out yesterday. I might manage to play it at the festival next weekend after all.
