bass soundfonts and drum machine

Post by deperito »

Hi there, don't know if this is the right section.

I'm working on a track and - unfortunately - I still couldn't manage to get my bass guitar at my studio...
So I was wondering if some of you could advise me how to get some "good sounding" bass lines inside my track, without actually having a bass to play
I was thinking to use some bass guitar soundfont, but the ones I tried so far sounded "plastic" and almost without "dynamic"... Just like guitar soundfonts anyway.
Maybe you could recommend me some good soundfont or something better to use?

I'm also looking for a good Drum Machine to get drums in the track. So far I tried Hydrogen, but it felt a little bit "weird" at times... I think it might have something to do with its samples or with its feature which make every instrument sound different every time it is played (I think it has more than one sample per instrument and just rotates over the whole set). Idk, sometimes it feels a little bit "unnatural" to me, maybe is the way samples sound... Feel free to criticize and advice me how to work better with it
I also checked LMMS' drum machine and was pretty happy with it... But it just isn't compatible with Jack synchronization. :( Plus I'm not sure I can find many samples to use with it, or where can I find them...
Maybe you could recommend me a good Drum Machine to check as well?

Thanks in advance to you all

I'm not sure of the genre you are producing, but you might find something useful at Karoryfer Samples. They have both paid SFZ libraries:

https://shop.karoryfer.com/collections/all

and free ones:

I've been happy using their free MeatBass (a sampled upright, not an electric) on a variety of singer-songwriter and string band songs.

Try the bass from this website... it is not a soundfont, but rather a sample library in SFZ format (which is compatible with the Sfizz plugin, https://github.com/sfztools/sfizz)

They also have other free sample libraries...

For the drum machine you may check if MT PowerDrumKit suits you

For bass, there are loads and loads of bass guitar soundfonts around. To enhance their sound, try Calf Bass Enhancer, may work wonders.

From @tseaver's link, the fashion bass with calf bass enhancer has a very nice sound to it.

Those with a 32 bit capable vst host can find a huge collection of basses and kits included in the Proteus VX plugin,
based on a popular and oft used E-mu synth/module. Find at:

DecentSampler project has drums and basses among it's collection, a new bass is on the front page, at the moment

Thank you all for the lot of stuff you suggested! <3

Let me just ask you some more question to be able to check it!

@Loki Harfagr Is that a drumkit I can use with drum machines and similar (ex: Hydrogen), or I should use it standalone, maybe playing it with Ardourd using midi?

@Impostor Could you tell me how to add and use lv2 plugins?

Again, thank you all so much!

@deperito

If you are still using AV Linux it has SFizz, AVL-Drumkits and literally hundreds of instrument and effect LV2 and VST Plugins already installed to use with Ardour. Ardour even has it's own Fluidsynth Soundfont Player, simply load your favorite Soundfont's and go!

It's plugin only not standalone, you can use it either as a drumkit or as drum generator or as a midi drum tracks builder (then put the built tracks in your sequencer or DAW). I guess you can use Hydrogen or other sequencer to send it midi flow if you put it in a plugin holder (bridge as Carla or DAW) as long as you can chain your midi flow towards it, I only have used it as a drum tracks generator in Ardour though :)
