high quality plugins for cinematic music?

Post by Jojo »

Hi,
A few days ago, I asked about east west but on Linux.

Before pulling the trigger going back to windows for composing,

Are there very high quality plugins for cinematic/trailers/orchestral, paid is fine, but running without hassle under Linux.

I don't want to struggle with software installation and whatnot, just being creative (Wine being the limit).

I discovered soundtrap but instrument quality/articulation is not high enough.

Thanks

Probably the best bet for a ready made plugin is what comes with musescore https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HYEGwQ-JQrA

Yes, everything high quality only exist for Windows and OSX and is held under tight lock with all kinds of DRMs and walled-garden software.

Eventually people will show up in this thread and tell you otherwise and link to this or that. And everyone of these links will be an audible disappointment.

I want to stress that this is not Linux fault. The orchestra-software developers are to blame, that they don't support Linux.

It depends on what you want to do.
If you want a particular orchestral sound, then yes you need to go to the other platforms, but if you want to develop your sound then everything you need is available with Linux.
Personally I'm not interested in classical instruments, except when they are being played by groups of musicians. I find I'm far more creative when I develop my own sounds to suit what the music I'm 'hearing' suggests.

That's -very- interesting, it is not what I am after right now, I need to create a lot of epic small trailer sounds in a very short time span.

But do you mind developing that idea of creating the sound? What pointers may you give me?

The sound quality is CRAZY.

Do you plan to add strings and other more classical orchestra instruments?

Yes I started off with orchestral woodwinds and I also put together the brass but I'm not 100% happy with either so for now I've pulled the woodwinds and the brass remains unreleased while I focus on some other projects. But I intend to get back to the orchestral ones, probably next year.

pianobook.co.uk has some very good cinematic libraries for DecentSampler. You won't have a full balanced orchestra, but you can put together your own big, dramatic soundtracks with the right libraries.

Well, everyone develops their own way of doing things, but to start with you need a synth (software or hardware) that has editable patches. Go through these till you find a patch with a sound that nearly fits what you want, then tweak controls (even if you don't know what they do) till you get what you want. Save this somewhere immediately! It is very easy to make just one little adjustment and totally lose what you had!

I don't want to struggle with software installation and whatnot, just being creative (Wine being the limit).

I do have a number of the Spitfire Audio libraries running successfully under wine-dev on the latest AVL-MXE:

I've had to use their library manager's "repair" option more often than seems optimal, but it does work. I keep those plugins in a separate WINE prefix, and manually enter its path into my DAW's plugin search path list.
