Is Linuxsampler deprecated?

I use Linuxsampler a lot and I found it was a good idea to separate Engine and GUI, thus avoiding GUI problems with plugins in DAWs.

But the project seems to be dead or half-dead, Linuxsampler seems to be missing in recent versions of some Linux distributions and there were discussions about its license all the time.

On the other hand we have lots of sample players for sf2, sfz and wav files like sfizz, liquidsfz, Carla, samplv1 and so on.

Are you still using Linuxsampler in new projects?

I stopped LinuxSampler when the other software you mentioned was on par because LS is not the variant of FOSS I liked. Also the server/client model didn't work well with plugins.

That said, it is still the only option to load .gig files (without conversions to other format). libgig from the linux sampler project is true GPL, so in theory it may be possible to use that in a different plugin. But why, the format is a legacy format for a long time now.

As someone who assembled and paid a lot of money for gig files over the years, linuxsampler is as important now as it was in previous years. The playback of my gig files, which haven't 'aged' at all, is as good now as it was then.

I would cheerfully argue in favour of a proper gig format plugin using libgig in LV2 or clap format, but just recently, Fantasia was upgraded, and so we have a decent interface for building large .lscp files once more. (Thanks Grigor)

It was a bit tricky to compile, for some reason the tarred up source for gigedit wouldn't compile on my system and I had to redo it all and use the svn versions.

There appears to be a new tool called gigcreator but I couldn't get that to compile either as it throws wxwidget and probably some other errors.

Anyway, it's a great tool for playing gig format collections, and there are huge amounts of good gig libraries, ie, the signal to noise ratio seems to be quite good.

Kontakt has a huge amount of libraries but so many of them are lame, lol.

That discussion is ancient history, almost all of the links are dead.

People using gig libraries should be investigating moving on to SFZ format (at least), or using VST (software instruments that don't need a separate player). A good idea would be to take that libgig library and use it to create a utility that will convert a gig file to an sfz file. GIg is a dead format, which means that the prospect is very likely that any developer currently working on it, will probably be moving on to something else soon. When that happens, there's no one updating (ie, maintaining) the software, and "regressions" tend to happen. A regression is when some update to software causes other older, unmaintained software to inadvertantly stop working.

The GigaPiano is the worlds first gigabyte-sized instrument designed specifically for the Nemesys GigaSampler and ships for free with the GigaSampler Full Edition. Featuring a Yamaha Concert Series Grand with real ivory keys. Yamaha stopped using real ivory a few years ago when they realized that the worlds population of elephants was not reproducing themselves fast enough to keep up with the demands for Yamaha pianos.

And I'll bet that almost all of those products are no longer available in giga sampler format. For example, I chose a title at random - the Kirk Hunter products. Going to the website, I looked at the "requirements" for every product. They all require Kontakt. There's no gig format anywhere.

I know that the Vienna Symphony products are not sold in gig format. They're VSTs that use a proprietary engine. And Garritan products are VSTs that use ARIA's engine (essentially SFZ).

This is like going to Microsoft's web site to look for a link to purchase Windows 95.

Most of these titles are not being sold or supported any longer by their original vendors. That's how it goes with older software titles and hardware. Where and how users source old titles from is a challenge left for those who would like to work with historic gigasampler format libraries. Where there's a will there's a way.

I cannot buy a new firewire MOTU Traveller MK1 from MOTU either.

That doesn't mean that Travellers cannot be sourced or used in Linux, despite the vendors not supporting it, despite the lack of interest being shown by distros to support it, despite the slow pace of development on drivers, despite the lack of clearly written, well ordered and up to date information which clearly explains (to the uninitiated) how all these parts work and fit together, what works, what doesn't work etc etc etc.

I just compiled it a couple of days ago and it works just fine. So no I wouldn't say it's deprecated. It does what it says on the tin. It plays gigasampler, sf2 and sfz format samples.

That's a fair point. If something already does what you need, use it.

But in the case of items (software or hardware) that are important to your workflow, and you plan to continue using into the indefinite future, it's important to evaluate whether something is being actively developed or otherwise. Something that is deprecated may work perfectly well today, but is much more likely to suffer from regressions that end up never being fixed in the future. These items also are unlikely to be updated to include new features/support that you'll need in order for them to continue to be better choices than the alternatives.

So, it's important to recognize when something is deprecated/abandoned/discontinued.

If someone is currently using gig format, I would say it's time to start planning an exit strategy. In other words, how am I going to handle a situation where I upgrade my copy of Linuxsampler, and find that there are now problems with those gig files? Am I going to forego that LS update in order to continue using my gig files? Am I going to switch to another, non-deprecated option? Am I going to try using 2 different partitions/setups, in order to use the gig files sometimes, or the new LS update other times? Etc.

And to the person who currently isn't using a deprecated item, I would not advise that person to adopt it.

Gig files. Firewire. These are two things that clearly are deprecated. If you're not already using them, don't start. If you are using them, think about an exit strategy since every additional day makes it more likely you'll be faced with an ultimatum on their continued use.
