Step it Bach

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey, it's funny, the Bach days are upon us. First @milo's wonderful surf rock on the c major prelude from the first book of the Well Tempered Clavier and here is my disco funk version of the F minor prelude from book II (BWV881A).
https://youtu.be/xfF46RYtoDY
This piece is a pure Linux in the box production, which surprised even me. :) A lot of LinuxSampler for piano, electric piano, drums, brass and strings, Yoshimi for the string ensemble sound and Fluidsynth for the bass. I reused the effect chains from Dacen on four with slight modifications.
I didn't paly through the whole prelude, but borrowed a few parts, as was quite usual in those mid 70s rearrangements.
Enjoy your Sunday, Jeanette

This was a fun piece with very clear production!

Yeah, the 70s, and sometimes I got an ABBA-feeling, this is a bit like Benny A played the piano.

I am not too fond of the snare sound, but that is just a matter of taste. I am also curious what the song would sound like if you upped the tempo! :)

Thanks for sharing!

The snare has a rather particular sound. I am not completely satisfied with the sound yet, but it goes a very long way towards the desired result. :)
As for the tempo: feel free to pick your time stretching of choice. :) For smaller amounts there are many satisfactory tools out there. :) You wouldn't be the first to modify the tempo of my songs. :)

Haha! I love it!! As an old comic strip once said, "Great minds think alike ... And so do ours!"

A very nice pastiche. It belongs on a playlist with Walter Murphy's "Fifth of Beethoven" and David Shire's "Night on Disco Mountain." But I think your arrangement is more artful and less tacky. (But take away too much of the tackiness and it's not really disco...) You did a good job of arranging the piece into a modern format, and your choice of sounds was right on for the genre. I like how you throw in the runs of 1/16th notes on the piano on top of the disco groove. So nice! One of my coworkers just heard the piece playing in my office and she said it makes her want to dance.

Also, I love that little drum solo at about 3:30.

Many thanks @milo for both your very lovely comments and the two song recommendations. I knew both pieces, but not their arrangers and now I have a full version of the night on disco mountain. Night on bare mountain is one of my favourite pieces in almost any arrangement, beginning with the original, Tomita's great version, on to a student dubstep project or snippets in old RPI tracks. :)

Come on, Jeanette! You did it again. You always surprise me. And you work with a Nama. Audio production in GNU/Linux rocks thanks to you.

@jeanette_c proves that complaints about Ardour this, LMMS that, are moot.

Love this track, absolutely amazing jam reminiscent of instrumental eurodisco and prog rock (in the mid-to-late 70s, the two genres actually coexisted peacefully, see Love Beach by Emerson, Lake and Palmer). Love the e-pianos!

Thanks @digitsun both for the praise on the piece and for Nama. I'll pass it on to Joel, who'll be jazzed I'm sure.

I wouldn't go that far. Reasonable criticism is what moves us forwards. But such snags along the way don't have to be a hinderance to make and finish music.
