How to play live techno?

Post by TygerTung »

I am wanting to start a political band/group thingy, maybe just be, maybe other people joining in. The idea is to play at protests, raise awareness in a non confrontational way.

For example could play at climate change rallys, do a counter protest at anti-vax covid protests. If people were anti-vaxxers and wanting to spread covid around and protesting against the people wanting to stop it, I could roll up and have banners saying stuff like "wear a mask", "get immunised" etc. Sort of a party atmosphere protest. If things get nasty could just ride away.

The idea is to have a setup which is mounted on a bike trailer all powered by batteries, with some synths, speakers amps etc.

I'm planning on getting a Behringer TD-3 at Christmas time which would be ideal, and have some other synthesisers/keyboard which can run off batteries.

Now the question is for sequencing, how do I sort this out? Do you have just a bunch of arpeggios which you can switch on and off, and then tweak knobs to change the sound or what?

I have a Yamaha QY-10, but not sure how ideal that would be for this purpose. Do I just use an old laptop with Qtractor on it and use that for the sequencing and just drop in midi tracks and delete them, or is there some better software for this. Or do I use some other kind of hardware sequencer?

You see people playing live on youtube all the time so it must be possible of course!

You really need to wake up though.

First of all there is only a pandemic because the WHO changed the definition of what a pandemic is.
Secondly they are using the pcr test wrong, with a too high number of cycles, which leads to many false positives.
Those mask don't work against a virus, the virus is not spread by large droplets but by aerosoles, which are so small those mask can' t stop them.
If those vaccines would really work, then maybe you can explain to me, why we in the Netherlands have the same numbers as last year, when nobody was vaccinated yet. Also why do they want us to take a booster shot, that's the third jab in a year.
You might also wanna read up on virusses on how they mutate, and get more infectious, but less dangerous.

I could go on but I am gonna try to bite my tongue, because I remember a moderator here asking me and other to end the covid discussion.

For techno you need a tb303 or something that can do that sound.
And lest hope we won' t meet when I am protesting against all the bullshit spread by the main stream media.

people people were are the same
no were not the same cause we don't know the game.

I would like to ask you to investigate what chuck D means by this.

Hi Gps,

Thanks for your response. I am not going to have an argument here about the Covid-19, as it is beyond the scope of the forum.

I have saved up enough money for the Behringer TB303 clone. I think I will need some sort of drum machine too. I have a Casio HT-3000 which has a drum machine built in, but it isn't so good for playing live with. I was thinking perhaps of getting a Behringer RD-6 as they are quite cheap, although of course I could just use Hydrogen on an old laptop, however it isn't as nice trying to do something on a computer as having actual buttons to push.

It is a bit limited as to regards to the sounds it has though. I was thinking a Volca Sample might be ideal as it is reasonably priced, only a little more than the RD-6. There is a second hand RD-6 going for sale here in New Zealand which might be worth considering, if it doesn't go for too much.

The second hand market for synthesisers here is pretty limited, people seem keen to hang onto their gear. Maybe it is these strange times we are living in?

Although I am in general a fan of repetitive music ( Hip Hop, House, Disco ) Techno is often even for me a bit too repetitive.

But as far as I understand the basics:
A never changing boom boom boom boom although sometimes this fades in and out.
Then something like a TB303 were filter changes are the only variation.

The availability of synth can be funny. When released the TB303 was a big failure.
Almost nobody liked that thing, that did not sound like a bass at all.

Then things like Techno happened. :P

How to play techno live:

1) Buy a Roland TR-808 and program one 4/4 measure of the kick drum playing on the beat.

2) Press the Play button.

3) Come back an hour later and press Stop.

Thank you, indeed let's focus on the musicianship. I removed a couple of posts that were getting into this in a nasty way and their replies. I'm sure I'll be called a 'dictator' for this again, but apparently that's life ;) .

I don't know if raboof is a dictator. But I do know he's writing a book about his recent recovery from covid entitled "Mein Cough".
