"Breed", Nirvana version. Acoustic style.

Post by pdechery »

Hi everyone,

I've been a few months away, but had listened to some of the stuff posted here anytime I could. Will take a deeper look now to catch up.

I have a new track, which is a Nirvana song. It's a version I made some years ago but finally produced properly (at least to my standards).

I guess most of you will know the song, because it's from their iconic record, "Nevermind". To my ears, it's one of their greatest tracks. Very aggressive and anarchic. I also didn't realized, until I recorded this song, that the lyrics are interesting too, in a strange way.

The vibe I tried to create is a mixture of brazilian acoustic guitar style with a "grunge" feel. I'm a fan of Mark Lanegan's solo work also, specially the more folk stuff. So maybe there's some influence from it in the end result as well.

I know the voice could be better, maybe I'll redo it later.

As always, listens and comments are welcome.

I have to admit I hate Nirvana, and grunge in general... (how many of you will block me now? ) That said, I liked your arrangement, which is personal enough to manage to sound like its own song rather than a cover.

Cobain's lack of formal music training led him to some strange chord progressions, like the unexpected major chords in the chorus of this song. When all you have is power chords you don't worry about it -- you just play. :)

Back in high school I was a big Nirvana fan, and that phase was an important time of growth for my guitar skills. I still remember the day when I walked onto the school bus to go home and someone told me that Cobain had killed himself. I have long since moved on from grunge rock, and I find it grating on the ears now, but I still fall back on those skills from time to time -- especially in jam sessions. These days if I ever listen to Nirvana it's the MTV Unplugged gig. What would Nirvana sound like if Cobain had lived to mature his talent and mellow out a bit?

Your acoustic arrangement is nice, and a nice tribute. For what it's worth, I think it's better than the original.

I've got to share my favorite Nirvana cover: Smells Like Teen Spirit in Classical Latin https://youtu.be/PbEKIW3pUUk

Very smooth, laid-back performance. The mellow tone of the guitare make it much easier on the ear than the original - but maybe I'm just getting old

Hi @milo , thanks for hearing that one.

That's right. He was what I consider to be a true instinctive player.

Difficult to answer that one.

Thanks you! I had this fingerstyle riff for years in my nylon-string guitar. I tried it to be high as possibile in the mix.

I love this band also. Jerry Cantrell is one of my all-time favorite guitar players. Thank you!
