Upgrading kxstudio

Hello, I'm a new user of kxstudio (the distribution).
Which way is better to upgrade kxstudio, Synaptic or using the command line?

Why "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" and not "sudo apt-get upgrade"?

I added the kx repositories and already installed most of the plugins by hand. Is it possible to add the meta packages afterwards? I also installed some git versions (e.g. the calf suite) ... can this lead to probs?
