It should work. If your amp output impedance is small, and the input impedance of the load is high, then you essentially sum the voltages like that. That said, it might not work otherwise, as it might force the output stage to drive too much current, you might have very poor audio and distortion. I guess in that case a resistor could indeed help, but you will need some trial and error for the value. I don't think it can damage your equipment, but I am not taking any responsibility over that claim.

Maybe give us more info: what is the stereo source? What is the mono destination?

The other option is a small mono mixer. At one time you used to be able to get 4 into 1 mixers relatively cheap.

do not connect stereo channels without resistors, they are necessary to protect stereo outputs from signal source

This is close to what you need, just leave out 4th resistor for 2nd mono output
