Some disturbing news
Over on The Register there is a report that GitHub is in discussion with Microsoft, with a possible buy-out by Microsoft. If true, that would be a total disaster. That vulture has become dangerously 'friendly' in recent months, and considering their past history, I don't believe they have anything but the very worst intentions.

Re: Some disturbing news
Think this isn't the end.
Linus had programmed Git at that time because there was only SourceForge.
After discrepancies between open source and SourceForge due to similar incidents, the code moved to Git^foobar.
IMHO

Re: Some disturbing news
Git (the GPL software) is not GitHub (hosting service). But yes, it's disturbing to see this Microsoft cancer spreading more and more.

Re: Some disturbing news
If Microsoft buys out GitHub and it turns into any sort of problem, Git repos can be hosted in a number of other places.

Re: Some disturbing news
Considering that GitHub backend is private, MS can't really break much. I use GitLab which can be self-hosted.

Re: Some disturbing news
If Microsoft does buy GitHub, then it immediately gains lot of information about a lot of developers, as well as all the code. It's not called 'slurp' for nothing.

Re: Some disturbing news
Microsoft fuckery is too old and frequent a problem to be disturbing anymore. It's just part of the weather now and the world has learned to cope with it. They rain on people's picnic every once in a while but people have umbrellas or can just go and enjoy their picnic elsewhere. This is less than a Summer shower.MdMax wrote:But yes, it's disturbing to see this Microsoft cancer spreading more and more.

Re: Some disturbing news
I wonder if you use github to host your sourcecode, also I wonder if you are involved in a multi-dev project. If so, you'll properly know how much work it is to move a project from one host to a other. Usually you ain't do it, just to have some fun, do you?Luc wrote:Microsoft fuckery is too old and frequent a problem to be disturbing anymore. On the road again.
Re: Some disturbing news
Sure it's a nuisance, but I see people here talking about it like it's the end of the world or something very sinister threatens the very freedoms or existence of free software. It's not. It's a pain in the ass, but it's just a pain in the ass.

That sounds to me a bit different then this one:Luc wrote: It's a pain in the ass, but it's just a pain in the ass.
in special, when you know that I'm sitting here in my dried garden and wait for a summer shower in order to give my plants water. The race is yellow, the tomatoes hanging, no water over all, a summer shower will be very welcome, but who welcomes a pain in the ass.Luc wrote:This is less than a Summer shower.

Re: Some disturbing news
Here with us (Germany, Hessen) it rained also (for years) much too little. When it finally rains, an amount of rain comes down that would normally come down in an entire month. Unfortunately, however, this is limited to a very small regional area and then everything floods there.tramp wrote:in special, when you know that I'm sitting here in my dried garden and wait for a summer shower in order to give my plants water. Is that a bug?

Re: Some disturbing news
The problem is always the same: good people make good apps and then sell out to the big corporations. And the rest of the world pays the consequences.
Who of us is willing to not sell out? To refuse the millions and millions for their precious apps??
