Best Platforms to Share Creative Commons Music?
What are the best platforms to share Creative Commons Music?
I currently use YouTube and Soundcloud. I plan to check out http://libremusicproduction.com/ today after seeing it here.

Re: Best Platforms to Share Creative Commons Music?
Most platforms that give you visibilty are not really 'libre', and the non profit ones don't give you visibility. I have discovered clyp.it , a bit like soundcloud, but less obtrusive. Folks at the #opensourcemusicians freenode IRC channel used that. Not 'libre', but deserving support, IMHO. And you could try archive.org, but people will not discover your stuff unless you link to it somewhere else.
some of my stuff is ending up here https://alooshu.byethost17.com and here https://clyp.it/user/i4p5dng1 , and you can love me at https://liberapay.com/aloo_shu

Re: Best Platforms to Share Creative Commons Music?
Someone in another IRC channel told me about clyp.it but I don't understand the favouritism over it. However, its gaining a cult following like that, I'll try it. I'm not sure if anyone still uses ReverbNation. I don't want to touch MySpace again either.
Do you know of any other platforms?

Not mentioned yet:
The FreeMusicArchive gives some good exposure and supports CC licensing.
BandCamp supports CC licensing too. They are not libre, but they give good exposure, offer ease of use, and I think they are actually doing something progressive for the recording industry (supporting alternative licenses, flexible pricing, open file formats for downloads). Only downside for me: no easy licence filtering (not all CC-licensed music is tagged "creative commons", so the best bet that I currently know of is to do a general search-engine query with the fixed string "some rights reserved"). I am campaigning for them to do licence filtering in their "discover" page, maybe more commons-enclined folks can do the same?
A libre platform is Dogmazic.net. They have 13 years of history and feel strongly about the commons. Supporting them is a good idea IMO, as they have had difficulties to stay afloat.
The organisation Musique Libre (linked to Dogmazic) lists a few interesting links (on the left of the page): http://musique-libre.org/
[and I love the Internet Archive for what they believe in. Support them too. Soundcloud is convenient but we have no idea where the business might be headed]
Gee I might write a blog post about this actually...

For some reason nobody seems to think about the Internet Archive, yet it's actually rather good, is entirely CC and allows you to create 'albums' with a perfectly good in-line player as well as doing conversions for you. Upload a wav file, and in a relatively short time both ogg and mp3 copies will magically appear.
It also has a (under used) comment field.

Re: Best Platforms to Share Creative Commons Music?
Maybe because the traffic is quite low, which would in effect diminish the magnitude of 'sharing'.folderol wrote:For some reason nobody seems to think about the Internet Archive, [...] It also has a (under used) comment field.
I'm still doing tests, still learning, although it might very well be that at one point I will have a brand and I will actually WANT the music to go REACH people. As in reaching out people. So at least 'the people' can take a shot at it and if 'they' don't like it that's fine and if 'they' do, all right. At thta moment I will cetainly look for places where there's actual traffic. Eg. to make an analogy, compare the traffic of Linux Musicians to KVR. And I reckon it's more of a strategy than anything else. What sites will fit the strategy will be the ones.

... but KVR has no host capability, so why not use KVR to link to the archive?jonetsu wrote:Eg. to make an analogy, compare the traffic of Linux Musicians to KVR. P.S.
I've been doing this for years when entering the KVR Cafe Contests

Re: Best Platforms to Share Creative Commons Music?
'twas only but a comparison in traffic. Please substitute real music hosts to these two names. I haven't thought of any at the time I wrote that. Let's say that Soundcloud has more traffic than archive.org, concerning music.folderol wrote: ... but KVR has no host capability, so why not use KVR to link to the archive?
I know, I've 'seen' you there. Did not have any time to look more after that though. Just posting a tune in the Café now and then. I think writing comments and having links in the signature is good - perhaps better - in my case, then just a few views in the Café, and a rare comment or two.folderol wrote: I've been doing this for years when entering the KVR Cafe Contests

One thing though that I keep in mind, is that Louigi in LAU is actually making a few dollars with his drone material. I think around $2000 or somesuch last year. And drones aren't everyone's cup of tea.
But the material itself must attract attention to start with. The mix and mastering must vibrate, "have something". It is not, but it might be, proportional to the dedication put into. And circumstance. And luck. As for me, I don't have much ideas about this so far, but I keep an eye open to gather information.
Cheers.

Re: Best Platforms to Share Creative Commons Music?
I don't know about the others, KVR is at: http://www.kvraudio.com. It's a site with high traffic, with forum sections for many plugin companies, but also with other topics such as the Music Café where people show their music.

Re: Best Platforms to Share Creative Commons Music?
Thanx for kicking this off, it's becoming really informative.
One ethical thought, though: ever seen fundraising banners like 'If everybody donated X $, this campaign would be over in 24hrs'? At wikipedia.org, X is usually 2$. At archive.org, it's 50. Hosting wikis is of course less data intensive than audiovisuals, but as I understand it, the Internet Archive is intended as that, an archive, but not as a free host for primary content.

Re: Best Platforms to Share Creative Commons Music?
Agreed, do consider Bandcamp. Unless you require pure libre in your platform, they are a great choice. They have built-in CC options, but your music will be included in a broad ecosystem with a variety of genres and licenses instead of isolated. People will find your tunes there because of its popularity and community. Not relevant here, but someone has been developing a FOSS client app for Android (it's on F-Droid now), which is nice.chtfn wrote: BandCamp supports CC licensing too.
