The Open Source Musician Ep. 81 - New Tricks with Ardour 5

Post by ssj71 »

The Octember episode of the podcast was just released (it took me a month to finish so it's both September's and October's episode).
We demo some of the new Ardour 5 features and plugins, an epic track from Bluebell, me failing to speak German, as well as the usual news and drivel.

https://archive.org/details/OSMP81

Please participate in our Tunestorm (the musical uncompetiton) #16 which is themed "Game Music" and due Nov 14.
Supertux needs a new track for one of their levels (see http://forum.freegamedev.net/viewtopic.php?f=68&t=7081). You can contact them or any open source game you like to see if they have any needs for new music, or just write a song inspired by a game, or a gameshow theme or whatever you want. If you want to contact some open source game developers try http://forum.freegamedev.net or irc.freenode.net/#freegamer.

This is due in just 1 month, so if you are interested, get on it! :) We really want more participation.

Outstanding work as always, Spencer. Great job explaining the "pins" feature and sidechaining with the vocal and drums examples. You're inspiring me to get my hands dirty with that stuff. It's a little intimidating/confusing to me but I feel much better equipped to try it now.

Super minor production note, but fyi there was a (very faint) high pitched hum throughout this episode. Seemed to go away during the Bluebell track, but that might have just been masking it.

good ear, I didn't notice. Thats helpful feedback, thanks. Its probably my mic preamps. As my firebox is aging it seems to be leaking more digital comm noise into the audio signal, maybe through the phantom power, and its even more pronounced when the pres are fairly high gain. I'll see if I can smoke it out.

Thanks for listening and especially for the kind words, guys.

I did, too. It could be a computer's fan as well.

Why is this topic stuck at the top of the subforum rather than moving down in the list in chronological order like other topics? Is it a setting on my end, or is it the same for others?

one of the moderators set this as a sticky thread, which makes it stay on top. I appreciate that, but I'd like if got updated so that the latest announcement was always changed to be the sticky one (i.e. episode 85 now).

That requires some routine maintentance which I understand is probably obnoxious, so if the mods would prefer, I could make a single thread that I update with every new show announcement. Unfortunately though then its harder to notice when there's actually a new episode vs a new comment about an old one. :\

I'm good with whatever. You mods choose. :)

I believe you can always edit the title of the first post in the thread, which effectively renames the topic. I don't know if it will work here, but it works in many forums.

Ok, good point. I'll try that for the next few episodes.

Thanks!

I just was about to politely ask for stickyness removed, good thing it happened. Letting OSMP announcements find their place here naturally seems like a fine solution to me, so does stickyness provided it's kept up to date, which is more work/involves more actors. What might need some love next is the wiki, this would be the natural place for OSM information to come together.
some of my stuff is ending up here https://alooshu.byethost17.com and here https://clyp.it/user/i4p5dng1 , and you can love me at https://liberapay.com/aloo_shu
