[Arch] why no Fsthost in AUR4?

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

I used to rely on it quite a lot. Maybe the codebase is old, dunno. I’ll try to make a PKGBUILD for it over the holidays, see how things work. I’ll push it to AUR if they do.

just in case you don't know. AUR3 PKGBUILDs are still available (could be usefull)

https://github.com/aur-archive/fsthost
https://github.com/aur-archive/fsthost-svn

I manged to install the former with the old PKGBUILD

the svn one gives me errors while "makepkg":

Thank you, Capoeira, I’ll start off from those. There have been a lot of commits since 1.5.4, so a lot might have changed since. Looking at the error messages you got, it appears there might be something about lash, but I might be wrong. I’ll report back here as soon as I get any result.

I couldn't manage to make 1.5.4 conect to jack (old PKGBUILD).
beside the anoying "badwindow", which only workaround is to try and try again (it will run after some trys; sometimes 10x); when I don't get this error I get another one.
hope you have better luck

why are the pro audio apps taking longer than other distros lately to update? I know shiv did that but I think he's a busy man lately. dunno if anyone will take over.. Ardour took 2 months before we got 4.4
AUR4 got rid of a lot that I use to use like kxstudio Calf plugins, hydrogen-git, just to name a few..

Yeah, I’ve noticed that, too. I guess it’ mostly about maintainers and limited time available. That’s what stops me from getting involved more heavily. Seeing that I’m already working two jobs and maintaining a few PKGBUILDS, I don’t think I could muster the time to do much more – not on the official repository side of things, anyway. Plus I don’t even know how to get there (or if I even qualify, for that matter). Apart from that, I’m pretty much so tired most of the time that I’m afraid I might make (stupid) mistakes, which might not be acceptable with official repositories. People tend to be more forgiving with PKGBUILDS.

All things considered, I think we Arch users should try to get together (perhaps some subforum?) and keep track of what’s missing and what needs improving/adding/completing. There’s also a pro audio repository that I think could do with more involvement. At some point I considered approaching those guys in order to broaden the range of binary packages made available to the Arch community, but, once again, it was my limited time quota that stopped me. I am willing to take up more work, if only I had the hours to put in.

Joermungand, I just caught onto your name.. You're great with your PKGBUILDs.. And you usually help me out when I ask in the comments for help. Thank you man!
Yeah we need a subforum here and the proaudio repo, dunno if that dude has time either.. I don't have the time plus I've tried making my own PKGBUILD and all failed.

Thanks for the kind words. Just doing what I can with the resources at hand. I really want this thing to work. Ever since I moved to Arch a few years ago, I’ve firmly and increasingly believed this is the way to go. There’s good and not so good, as always. And part of the not-so-good comes precisely from the degree of freedom it allows for. There’s a lot of diverging effort involved. AUR is good, but, unless there’s a plan, an agreement on what’s supposed to happen in the long run, things will just evolve as they do now – in all directions at once. I know this is not Arch philosophy, but, in order for real pro audio to work, I think it is in order. That’s why I believe a forum for all things Arch is needed. At least we can get to see what is feasible and what we can do to make it happen. I’ll contact the pro-audio repo maintainers. Perhaps I can divert some of the work in that direction, make binaries available, which would streamline a lot of the effort. Provided I find the time and energy to do it. Aye, there’s the rub.

The first (smallest ever possible) step has been made:

At least it’s a start.

A PKGBUILD for Fsthost 1.6.1 has been made available in AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/fsthost/ (not thanks to me, though; judging by the coincidence in user id’s, I’d say the contributor is the actual Fsthost developer). I ran into a couple of issues first building it, then running it. See my comments on the package page for solutions to both.

A new version of the PKGBUILD has been released, addressing all previous issues. It’s good to go.
