Studio 13.37 is out!

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Studio 13.37 is out!

Post by l0wt3ch »

Everybody's favorite commercial Linux distribution is back with a new release.

Studio 13.37 (pronounced "leet") is based on Slacko 5.3.3, which in turn is based on Slackware 13.37 (hence the version number). However, it is not a remaster, but built from scratch from the ground up.

New features:

- 32- or 64- bit realtime kernel (3.2.5-smp-preempt-rt)
- all audio production and video editing programs updated to latest stable version or better, compiled specially for Studio 13.37
- contains 14% Slacko 5.3.3, tiny RAM-based OS built from Slackware 13.37
- performance exceeds that achieved by all previous versions
- “multimedia extras” pack that can be loaded and unloaded on-the-fly
- experimental apps, such as Open Octave Midi and Qtractor, included
- rtirq for automatic rt-audio tuning at boot
- no proprietary software
- dssi-vst, fst, and WINE-RT for running VST plugins
- pre-configured so REAPER can be installed with a click, without having to adjust audio preferences

Hi,

"Everybody's Favourite" Time will have to tell I suppose

Best of luck on your new release, Starting from the ground up with Slackware must have been an enormous amount of work.

Nice to see something outside of the debian world for production work. But that's all I'm going to say here without getting into the old debate here about commercial free software!

This is a great opportunity for people needing/wanting an affordable old laptop
to travel, jam, or perform with, or to to get some extra multi-timbrality out of yoshimi,
an extra instance of guitarix/rakarrack/hydrogen, or a vst without linux equivalent. 8)

You're implying 'Studio 13.37' does not handle the GPL respectfully. Yes, he's asking money for the distribution, and while I personally think that is a bad idea (because I think it hampers collaboration), it's perfectly legal within the word and spirit of the GPL, as long as he publishes the source code to all his customers.

It looks like 'Studio 13.37' is the new incarnation of what used to be called 'Studio 4'. I remember there was some uproar about it back then but don't quite remember what or why. Let's give him a chance to try and get it right this time.
Cool, thanks for sharing.

There is no problem with commercial (asking money for the distribution), but, not only that he must publish the source, he must make his users aware that they have the right to receive the source. That is the first point I miss when I inspect the project side. And yes, that was exactly the point of trouble with his last distribution.
I really hope that this time all went well in this point, lets see. . .

Ah yes. For example the 'no proprietary software' feature bullet point could be extended to read 'no proprietary software - full source code to all components available' or something?

If I remember correctly, I think the argument on here before was caused by saying that the previous version made all of the Debian-based audio distros (that need to be installed, don't run in RAM as well as they do off a hard drive, don't have realtime kernels, use pulseaudio, are bloated in size, etc.) obsolete. Then some people who got offended by that pretended it was a GPL issue.

There's nothing wrong with the way Studio 13.37 "handles the GPL license". There was no problem with the way Studio 4 handled it, either. In fact, I contacted the EFF about it, and they didn't say anything.

I don't intend to get into an argument this time, so I'll just leave this comment here as my response to the issue, and drop it.

You won't find the evidence on what the uproar was, because the threads pertaining to Studio 4 were removed from the forum. Here's the bulletpoints:

-Studio 4 deceptive marketing
-Source not being made available
-RT Kernel is almost a mute point these days

Guys, sorry to have dredged up old sores, didn't mean to.

Perhaps we should try and discuss/fix things in a private exchange first, to prevent this from getting out of hand on the public forum again? If the parties involved are interested in this at all, that is.

No problem, I have send a mail to gpl-violations.org and wait now what they said.
This time I'm one of the Copyright holders from a software in use.
I have no interest in a private or open discussion.

Yes, I think this is a very good idea. I have defended the GPL in the past, and have seen Richard Stallman speak in person on this subject. I will be more than happy to do anything the EFF asks.

Okay, I receive a answer from license-violation#gpl-violations.org
I ask if they see a violation on the Studio 13.37 project side, here is the answer:
Looks like it. On the website he/she claims that everything is under
GPL. I would suggest contacting the person in question, gently pointing
out to his/her obligations.

If you have already done so, let us know and we'll try again.
So, I try it again, hopeful that we could come to a friendly solution, raboof have already pointed to a possible easy way,
raboof wrote:Ah yes. For example the 'no proprietary software' feature bullet point could be extended to read 'no proprietary software - full source code to all components available' or something?
to fill the first point.
Then, when you are willing to make the source for your users on there request available, everything is fine.
If you didn't like this, or a similar solution, I will give up here and lead it into the hands of the gpl violation foundation.

Please ask them to write down any specific violations (if any), and forward them to my email address.

Thanks
