Does ESI Maya44 PCI work with Linux?

Post by kokoshmusun »

Hi, Today I finally went to a music store to order the ESI Juli@ which is Linux-compatible. But somehow, the seller convinced me the ESI Maya44 PCI is a better choice for me and he assured me it works with Linux, so I ordered that instead. It's on its way.

However, now, on the internet, I'm confused about the information about Maya. Does it work with Linux or not? Does anyone know for certain whether this card works with linux? I can't say which distro, but most probably I will use an Ubuntu-based one (puredyne, ubuntu studio, etc.).

This will be great help because if it doesn't work, I must cancel the order and get a Julia instead. Thanks!

Well, I finally installed the PCI card. I ran the puredyne 64-bit live CD, and it did recognize the Maya44. I didn't check things in detail but I started JACK and there was basic functionality. So I can say for sure that it will produce sound, but I don't know about any other details yet. I wanted to drop this not for future reference for other people who have the same card.

I'd not considered that card. It seems to offer similar capabilities to the Delta44, but at about half the price (in UK). I'm still pondering what interface to get. I looked at basic USB interfaces, but I'd like to get something with 4 inputs to allow for future needs. Although the Maya44 can do phantom power I'm thinking I may get a simple mixer with mic preamps. I mainly record guitars and vocals and need to be able to change things around without fiddling around at the back of the PC.

I've started a wiki page on this card with some links

http://wiki.linuxmusicians.com/doku.php ... maya44_pci

If you can let us know what does and doesn't work then I can update it.

Sure, my thought was to also get a small mixer so I don't have to fiddle at the back of the computer. I don't see how Maya44 would be a hindrance for that.

I haven't found the time to choose and install a linux distro and run extensive tests. If there is a formal set of procedures (commands and resulting outputs) for testing the capabilities of a card, let me know and I'll be happy to run them and report back.

I only have the puredyne live DVD, and I was supposed to do an extensive search before settling on a distro (e.g., never tried Ubuntu Studio and would like to, even though I don't really want the Unity DE). So as soon as I can settle on a distro and install, I can tell you more.

I don't know of a standard test. I'd be interested in what options you see in the mixer app or alsamixer, e.g. how many channels, turning on phantom power. Then if you can select the card in JACK and choose different inputs for tracks in something like Ardour. A live distro like Ubuntu Studio or KXStudio may be enough to do those checks.

If you can have a play and grab some screen shots that would be great.

I've found some more links for the wiki, including notes from the kernel docs that suggest that most features are supported. It's the usual problem that there is limited information on the web and some of it is old, so you don't know what the current situation is. Anything you can contribute will be appreciated.

Thanks
