Linux ISOs downloaded. What's next?

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Linux ISOs downloaded. What's next?

Post by Tippe »

Hi.

I have downloaded some Linux ISOs.
But I don't want to overwrite my current OS.
So, I want to test these ISOs first.

How can I get such ISO installed onto an USB flash drive, so that I can use it from USB stick?

I tried balenaEtcher, but this won't start in my OS, as balenaEtcher is 32bit.

I'm sure there must be some options/commands to do this via terminal.

Thanks

I use Ventoy, which is included with SolydK. It may be in your distro's repositories. You use the app to install itself to your USB stick, then just copy the downloaded ISO over to it and you're ready to use it as a Live USB.

Try using a virtual machine, you'll be able to save stuff and come back to it later.

No, setting up a virtual machine is not an option.
Consuming too much time.

Ventoy seems to be a good option. It installed properly and boots the ISO at least.

I have downloaded:

AVL_MXE-23.1-20240120_x64.iso
Fedora-Jam_KDE-Live-x86_64-39-1.5.iso
openSUSE-Leap-15.5-DVD-x86_64-Build491.1-Media.iso
ubuntustudio-22.04.4-dvd-amd64.iso

That's all I could find by web search.

Ubuntu Studio 22.04.4 stopped booting by Kernel Panic. :(
Computer frozen, had to do a hard shutdown by power button.

*

AVL MXE 23.1 booted fine. But then...

How could there be a Linux Studio without having Qtractor installed by default?
That's bad. Then Ardour and MIDI is a mess.

Even though my MIDI keyboard was recognized and all connections are done, it won't let me play a single MIDI note.
Also Ardour doesn't show up all the sound cards available. So, no chance to get anything working with Ardour.
They should have stayed Audio only.

Also, AVL MXE 23.1 won't let me install Qtractor 0.9.38, which I had locally available in .deb package.
Complained about some missing libraries.
Tried to download them.

But then...

A Network Tool to setup Network with NOTHING in it to set up anything.
So, no internet connection.

My computer is a Lenovo. I have Fritz-Box Router.
WLAN is on the Mainboard and it appears in the Network Setup Tool.
But it's disabled and could not be enabled.

In my current OS WLAN connection is established automatically after booting into the graphical desktop.
So, internet connection immediately available.

*

Later today, if I will find some time, I will try the Fedora and OpenSuse ISOs.
I fear, this will also not work...

Thanks...

Right-click the iso file, select "make bootable usb-stick".

It's not always overly complicated with Linux :)

@Tippe

For AV Linux did you watch the release Video?, did you read the WiFi README on the Desktop?

Qtractor is not included by default this is true, it's a great program and should optionally install without issue (if you have internet connectivity) but it will want to install jackd and AV Linux is set to use PipeWire so I don't provide it by default..

AV Linux 23.1 changed EVERYTHING from the ground up and it has a few issues that I'm working on fixing, but posting here with questions to help me help you instead of complaints would be much more helpful to us both..

Hi,

openSUSE-Leap-15.5-DVD-x86_64-Build491.1-Media.iso

Leap is an "Old Stable" flavor. Not so many soft and HW support in there.
I recommend openSUSE Tumbleweed with multimedia:proaudio repository.

There is also LIbrazik, which you usually don't find with websearches.
It is based on debian (as of now debian old-stable).
The included audio software is a massive amount.
The other distros also come with graphics/video tools, librazik mainly comes with audio tools.

Oh, and dynebolic seem to be back to development.
One would find "experimental" (beta seems to be the name) isos to download.

@GMaq
What complaints?

I'm here for the search of a new working Linux OS to do some Music.
I'm willing to test whatever I can find and will work.
I'm not here to support developing Linux Operating Systems, but great if someone else is doing this.

No, I did not watch the Video.
No, I did not read the WiFi README on the desktop.
I even can't recall to have seen any WiFi README on the desktop.

I was busy trying to get Qtractor installed and working and also to establish internet connection.
But this didn't work. In network tool there is nothing available to enter e.g. my network code for the fritzbox.
I couldn't even find the fritzbox, as the wlan was disabled and could not be enabled.
Also I'm not interested in WIFI.

So, what for should I watch the video and read the WiFi README?

@nadir
Yes, I found Librazik.
I can't read french and I can't find a link to download on their page.

*

By now, I did not find the time to test the other two downloaded already.
As soon I could test, I will return.

Thanks for all the replies.

I think here you have to choose the "en" version to get an english live-iso:
https://download.tuxfamily.org/librazik/iso/
The english documentation is here (the top menu might look as if it was french, but it is english):
https://librazik.tuxfamily.org/base-sit ... nglish.php

If you use "IRC": they have a channel on the libera server, the channel name is #librazik; and while they usually talk french they are happy to help you in english. I am not too much into the details.

@nadir

Again, thanks for the links. :)

I checked Librazik 4 at first.

Booted really quick into the graphical desktop.
Qtractor and Calf Fluidsynth is installed by default, which is great for me and my use.

Again I could not find my computer's WLAN.
But then, accidentally I found a list of surrounding WLAN devices, from where I could choose my FritzBox.
Tried to connect to it, succeeded.
After entering my network code I was online immediately.

UNFORTUNATELY I could not recall my password for Linux Musicians.
So, I could not do this posting from within Librazik 4.
Next time it will work...

Perhaps I should buy me a network cable to connect the computer to the FritzBox?

I am online with Fedora Jam.
Easy as in Librazik.
But I think I will give preference to Librazik for further testing.

Sadly OpenSuse Tumbleweed seems not to be able to run in Live mode.
So, OpenSuse is out as AVL MXE is!

Need to format an external HD to install Librazik 4 on it for testing further.
