Laptop for audio

Post by crustypants »

Hi,

Anyone any thoughts about a laptop for audio work on Linux? My trust XPS 13 is battered.

I would like to run something with Coreboot.

I looked at the Starbook which looks pretty good, in the UK, but the ports aren't as nice as XPS13 - https://starlabs.systems/pages/starbook

I also wondered about buying a second hand Macbook Pro, had a quick look and they seem to be running ARM now instead of Intel, so I assume no IME or similar worries. Not sure about running DAW on Apple hardware with Linux though? Is anyone doing that?

On the same boat! Didn't know about StarLabs, looks good! Looking for a bigger screen though myself (16-17") and I'd prefer a local supplier so it's going to be either https://bto.eu/ or https://laptopwithlinux.com/. Tending towards BTO as it's going to be a replacement for my current BTO. The StarFighter looks awesome but it's too pricey for me. And when configuring the StarBook I exceeded the budget limit I have in mind too :( I also looked at https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/ but they're also quite expensive.

For many, many years, i'm fine with refurbished Dell Latitudes. They come around 200 to 400€, can hardwarewise be upgraded with common stock items without special tools, and they run at least a decade with many years of being serviced with fresh firmware by Dell. If you limit yourself on audio/office/development stuff, they are really enough. And i think, a refurbished Laptop doesn't need to be built. Usually, they are something around 4 years old. I never experienced trouble with Linux, neither on Laptops nor on Desktops. I used to get them refurbished not only for private use, but also in a few companies.

Fiddling with sequencers does not evolve into music necessarily and Mac users have smelly feet and guzzle little children.

Have checked refurbished laptops but the choice is minimal over here. And the ones that do have attractive specs are only about 10% cheaper than their contemporary equivalents.
