I think following the exploits of Dave Simpson, would be an ongoing example of a work in progress,
by someone who loves making and sharing music and video, while hoping to avoid the dreaded 'day job',
with related support and sales.

Sure, Spotify is not, by itself, an option to build wealth, and different people will value or dismiss it as desired.
But an aspiring musician with great music, has a dozen or more bases to cover to even gain a foothold in
the public eye and ears. The social media vehicles, giant or medium or small, are each only one of the bases.
We vote with our wallets and feet. Assuming everyone has or should have, the same motives and values when creating,
will not lead to a healthy art community or accurate conclusions about the business side of things, and related costs/benefits.

The more of those requisite bases left uncovered, the greater the chances of laboring/creating/promoting in obscurity.
Pretty much any single aspect of the status quo could be ridiculed as un-necessary, insufficient, or greedy,
so maybe some choices are better options than others. Some may be indespensible.

The songwriter once sang, "...don't let it bring you down, it's only castles burning".

Here's a video where a music artist discusses her youtube pay, with analytics stats: Mary Spender,
a smart hard working singer-songwriter-youtubeist.
