Sanderson: What Child Is This?

Post by milo »

My family records a Christmas carol every year in December, and I spent all day today (12/24/22) recording this. It is an all-Linux production using Ardour 7.1. My son Johann tried his hand at binaural mixing using the IEM plugins. That was our first time using them. I think the mix is pretty good, but I have been preferring more hard L-C-R mixes lately. Also new was a trombone we found at a secondhand store this fall, and an old autoharp that I have never used on a recording.

Here it is: https://sanderson.band/2022/12/24/what-child-is-this/

Merry Christmas, everyone!

Ooh wow, you're getting more and more elaborate with these arrangements. I feel like you pay particular attention to detail with the ones you do for Christmas. It's hard to pick a favorite part with so much going on, but I did really like the bells/trombone duet part, it's a fun contrast of sounds.

You updated to Ardour 7! I keep thinking that I should get to making some new music with it. Also I'm glad that the mic is still working well, what is it now, two or three years later? I can't remember.

Best Christmas present ever! I've gotten a lot of mileage out of that microphone. I think it was Christmas 2020, so 2 years.

Beautiful! I also like the mix. Johann is very talented!

Ouch, looks like I missed this in all the posts! Gorgeous piece as usual, and beautifully played/orchestrated.
How are you finding Ardour 7 so far? I'd like to switch too sooner or later, but I always wonder on whether it would be a big change or not from an experience perspective (features-wise it does looks like a lot changed, from the changelogs!)

It's about the same from my perspective. My existing workflow didn't really change in the new version. There are new bells and whistles, but I haven't really used them and thankfully they haven't gotten in my way.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and the listens!
