There was a “confession thread” somewhere... My confession is that after nearly five years of making music with open source apps only, I've now paid for Renoise. With mixed feelings I need to say... damn, it's good. Tracker-type of interface certainly does not fit for all types of music, but I think that Renoise will find its place among other apps in my Linux Audio toolkit. The possibilities and easiness for importing and editing instruments are just outstanding. Without previous experience, learning to use the tracker takes some time, but already after a couple of days of playing with it, the tracker seems to me as a quite handy way to deal with events.
Renoise 2.6 Geek Edition (!) will be released soon. There will be now also DSSI and 64-bit Linux support, as well as the possibility to code new features with Lua scripting and share these with other users.

There's been some issues with JACK Transport and DSSI-instruments in the beta versions of 2.6. I hope these will be fixed by the official 2.6 release. Unfortunately, beta versions are only available for those who have paid for the license. Testers can leave bug reports here:

Renoise is still lacking LV2 support, it only has LADSPA. To make LV2 come true some day, requests can be dropped e.g. here:

Demo version of 2.5 (no DSSI, no Lua, only 32-bit) is here:

Re: Renoise 2.6 with DSSI & 64-bit Linux support
Downloaded the 2.5 demo the other day. Not sure if I'm going to use it:
So if I create something with the demo version it is strictly prohibited to do whatever I want with my very own creations? That's just plain bollocks. Then I'll just stick to MilkyTracker.YOUR OWN CREATIONS
You are allowed to publish and claim ownership to your own creations
(i.e. songs) you created using evaluation or registered version of THE
SOFTWARE. However, any profit from such creations in any form (i.e.
original song format or derivative format - audio CDs, vinyl's,
audiotapes, MP3 or similar) either by you, either by third party (i.e.
record company) is strictly prohibited unless you own a license of THE
SOFTWARE registered with THE AUTHORS.
Re: Renoise 2.6 with DSSI & 64-bit Linux support
There's no need to apologise for using commercial software - show me any free tracker/DAW/Sequencer as polished and reliable as Renoise. I've been using it for about 2 years now and have been very pleased with it. At least now with the DSSI support you can use a bit more 'free' software with it a bit more easily!
Re: Renoise 2.6 with DSSI & 64-bit Linux support
I agree. Renoise and Harrison's Mixbus (Ardour) are great compliments to my open source based studio.
Re: Renoise 2.6 with DSSI & 64-bit Linux support
Meh, I just see it as dual licensed.AutoStatic wrote:Downloaded the 2.5 demo the other day. "Creative Commons Noncommercial" with the demo, work in Renoise is sort of a derivative.
"Full unrestricted license" for 59 Euro.
Not a big deal IMHO,
Re: Renoise 2.6 with DSSI & 64-bit Linux support
Final version of 2.6 has now been released.

DSSI support works well here in 64-bit. I mostly use Calf Fluidsynth (git-version) for soundfonts, Whysynth and ZynAddSubFx (no GUI). LADSPA plugins work fine too.
If things get awkward with a large amount of DSSI/VST-instruments running simultaneously, it's possible to render them to xrni-instruments, which is the native format of Renoise. This is a very handy feature.
There remain some issues with Jack Transport, which hopefully will be solved in the future releases. For speeding up the process you can give feedback in Renoise forum or Jack list... Now Transport works somehow, but when looping a pattern, Renoise may miss the first notes in playback (I have Jack2 1.9.6).
Anyhow, I really think that this is the best there is now for Linux in regard to making electronic music with live jamming / non-linear approach.

Re: Renoise 2.6 with DSSI & 64-bit Linux support
Have you tried loading gigastudio files with ls16?

Yep, LS16 plays just fine too.Pablo wrote:Have you tried loading gigastudio files with ls16?
