Update has killed my work flow.....

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Update has killed my work flow.....

Post by southpaw »

Hello good people,
so I had everything going well with very few Xruns, when in my late night/early morning delirium I agreed to an update. Since the update Jack will not connect.

Code: Select all

13:11:48.646 Patchbay deactivated.
13:11:48.756 Statistics reset.
Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory
Cannot connect to server socket
jack server is not running or cannot be started
13:11:48.791 ALSA connection graph change.
13:11:48.988 ALSA connection change.
Is there a way to revert the system to how it was before the update? I believe jack got updated to Jack2 and ffado got updated to 2.0.1. If there is any other diagnostic info that I need to post let me know.

Thanks in advance,
sp

Hello southpaw, if you open Synaptic and search for jack and ffado packages you can force a downgrade (select package then press ctrl+e).
You could also uninstall the unwanted packages and reinstall the versions you need.

Right on Auto,
so I removed all that had to do with Jack2 and FFADO 2.0.1, however I don't see where the old packages are. Is there a specific repo I need to go through? Sorry for the noob questions, your help has been greatly appreciated thus far.

Hello, check the directory /var/cache/apt/archives, that's where every single package resides that you have ever installed with a packagemanager (unless you did a apt-get clean in the past).
Otherwise you can install Jack1 from the standard repo's and FFADO from my FFADO repo, you have a recent Focusrite card right?

Yep I got the focusrite sapphire pro 24. Arlight, I will try that and post back.

Oh yeah, the Pro 24. I'm thinking about getting one too. My band has a Pro 10 that I use at home too but it's becoming very cumbersome to mess up my whole homestudio every week to take that thing out and put it back again. And at work we have a Pro 40 that works like a charm with Ubuntu 10.04 so I'm really thinking about getting the Pro 24. Recently Focusrite released the Pro 14, that could be an option too.

I still can't find it. This is weird. I remember doing an apt-get update, could this be the reason why I don't see it?

Would it be easier to just reinstall because everything I am trying will not allow me to avoid jack2?

Did you upgrade to Maverick Meerkat? Or do you have a PPA enabled that has Jack2 (like the PPA from FalkTX)? If it's an enabled PPA, just disable it and install Jack1 from the Lucid repo's.

But you could also use Jack2, if I look at the error message QjackCtl is probably looking for /usr/bin/jack while it probably should be /usr/bin/jackdmp for Jack2. The only specific version of a package you really need is FFADO from svn trunk (which you can download from my FFADO PPA).

Okay so I disabled the FalkTX repo. Reinstalled Jack and the FFADO from your ppa and here is what I get....

This could indicate something is blocking or interfering with the FireWire data stream. Did you configure your system for audio production? http://wiki.linuxmusicians.com/doku.php ... figuration

These messages are harmless, probably some things haven't been implemented yet. I get the same messages too but the card works fine.

Right on, I managed to take care of the NT:err. But the second one you mention was what I was more concerned with. If it doesn't affect recording and/or playback than I am fine with that. Thanks again for all your help Auto.

So I have managed to get things running quite smoothly. That err I mention before disappeared after I installed Fluxbox. What a difference. So now I just use gnome for regular desktop usage and flux for audio. I was testing it out last night with my bass plugged into my focusrite>jackrack with 3 FX plugins, while running hydrogen and ardour for several hours and I only got 1 Xrun  .

I feel like a kid at a candy store now. Thanks Autostatic for your help.
