Ardour tips & tricks

Post here your Ardour tips and tricks
6.1.2 The Fader

The fader is the primary volume control for the selected track. You can adjust the fader bar with your mouse, or input a specific numerical amount in the small input directly above the fader. To the right of the fader is the meter, which will show you when your levels are peaking. The number above the meter tells you the maximum value that the track's level has reached. You can reset this counter by clicking on it. It's a good idea to keep levels below zero to prevent clipping and distortion.
10.1. Snapping

An important and time-saving feature of Ardour 2 is snapping. Snapping allows you to easily and quickly place the playhead; edit cursor; region start or end at exactly the point you want without fine mousework. Recall that the snapping controls are two drop-down menus directly to the right of the edit clock.

Change the snap mode to "bars". Now place your mouse cursor somewhere near the middle of the editor window and press the "P" key on your keyboard. Notice how the red play head has jumped to the closest bar to your mouse position. Also notice that the main clock has also changed position. Now move your mouse again and press the "E" key on your keyboard. The blue edit cursor has now jumped to meet your mouse. Notice that the edit clock has changed position as well. Change the snap mode to beats, seconds, or any other mode and try again. Now try holding down the "P" or "E" keys and moving your mouse. The cursor will follow your mouse. When you have gotten the hang of this, return the cursors to zero.
When plugins are bypassed, they are not run by the CPU, so it's usually best when recording a track to bypass the plugins on it, and then re-enable them for playback.
Headphone Mixes
this is an overly-complex process with far too much clicking and well, you'd be right if you did. That's why there is a project on the go to make creating headphone mixes easier. Check out the Ardour forums on the Ardour website for more information, or to contribute patches.

Add effect using a external app like jconv
anyway, create a send or insert in the mixer strip black area where you add plugins and the like

: there's two techniques at least, sends are used for fx on several channels (like reverbs etc.), the return will go to a bus which you then mix to your master bus
Using freesound searchengine in ARdour:

You have to know what a playlist is in ardour!

note that you can select what the fader meter will display by clicking on the little button indicating "post". Clicking on it will cycle between "input", "pre" and "post". When you arm a track for recording, it switches automatically to "input", for monitoring what's coming in from outside on this(these) channel(s). During playback (or when you disarm the track for recording), it switches back to "post", which means it will display the levels after everything you put on the fader, FX, inserts, whatever that will affect the fader levels. You can also set it to "pre" so everything put on the post-fader area will not be considered in the display of the track levels.
