Rated Blue - "Need Your Love So Bad"

This new Video by Rated Blue is in memory of the great guitarist Peter Green from the early days of Fleetwood Mac (yes, they actually did exist before 'Rumors'...lol). Peter Green was a contemporary of American-influenced British Blues guitarists Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck and he was also in John Mayall's Bluesbreakers for a time which is where Clapton's 'Clapton is God' reputation was established. Where these other guitarists went on to superstardom is where their paths with Green diverged. Like Syd Barrett from 'Pink Floyd' Green was an unfortunate casualty of latent mental illness exacerbated by psychedelic drug use and his career with Fleetwood Mac came to an untimely end. For the rest of his life he was in and out of mental institutions and although later in life he performed and recorded again he was never able to fully regain his capacity as a phenomenal guitarist and soulful singer. He passed away on July 25/2020.

It would be interesting to see where Peter Green's career would have went had he not been waylaid with these debilitating issues. He had a phenomenally expressive guitar style and he often played his legendary gold-top Les Paul straight into his amp clean without any effects. All of his contemporaries have attributes that set them apart and make them unique but Green's tone and phrasing were unlike any of them and his playing was absolutely one of a kind. 'Woman tone' is a term kicked around by guitarists for that elusive perfect Blues guitar sound and nobody came close to Peter Green when it came to Woman tone!

'Need Your Love So Bad' was a Fleetwood Mac Cover of the original song by 'Little Willie John' and it was recorded early in their career but never put on one of their major album releases although various takes of it exist on box sets and retrospectives. When I first heard it the guitar tone and playing made the hair stand up on the back of my neck and the heartfelt vocal really appealed to me as well. It is one of my absolute favorite Blues tunes and I was saddened to learn the full story of the man I was listening to. I'll never be in the same guitarist universe as Peter Green (who will!?) but we are performing and sharing this song to remember him and the inspiration he gave.

I get Abbey Road feelings, the Beatles were a bit bluesy in their later days. I read that FM recorded this in 1968, so maybe George H listened to the original?

I'm sure the Beatles would have seen Peter Green and Fleetwood Mac playing all the time, all of these guys hung around the London clubs together at the time. American Blues was a huge influence at that time both on the British guitarists but also on the American Bay area Bands in San Francisco like The Grateful Dead etc..

It's a messy history though... white artists like Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac etc etc. did popularize the Blues form and get it into the hands of white record buyers worldwide and many of these artists did call attention to the original artists of these songs and a few black artists like BB King, Freddie King, Albert King, Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy found a new popularity and big enough audiences to sustain successful careers but on the other hand a lot of the original black artists and songwriters did not receive the credit and recording/publishing royalties they deserved..

As Blues merged with improvisational Rock it kind of got watered down from it's unique gut-level music to self-indulgent stadium Rock and from there in my opinion something beautiful was lost... but I digress

Here's my favorite "blues" tune. It's called "My Human Gets Me Blues" by "Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band". WARNING: Not for the musically faint-hearted. At times, various band members are deliberately playing in different meters/scales, and suddenly join together, and just as suddenly break off again. And the lyrics are even weirder. Recorded 1968 and produced by Frank Zappa.

He only did the one album with John Mayall 'Hard Road' which is superb. The Supernatural on that album and his version of the Stumble especially. After that it was Fleetwood Mac and (alas) downhill after. Some credit him with inventing that 'Lightning in a bottle' style of lead playing - Drifting by Fleetwood Mac was one of those songs and made me desperate to play lead guitar as a teenager. There is also a very interesting album of covers called 'Blues for Greenie' by Gary Moore, who owned the Greeny Les Paul for a while.

I was aware of the Gary Moore album, my feelings about Moore are kinda mixed, he really danced on the edge of the 'flash vs. substance' line and opened the door to people like Joe Bonamassa who are definitely way past that line (all my opinion of course). Once we get into gymnastic exercises I lose interest very quickly..

That's a binary choice thing.. "there are 2 kinds of people, those who like Frank Zappa (and by extension good 'ole Cap'n Beefheart) and those who don't"
