Hello trevorlawrence, I think admitting that you actually BUY that kind of CD's is a bigger sin Can you really enjoy those superficial, unadventurous, cautious productions that are mastered way too loud? That's just an opinion of course, no personal offense! My ears get tired after a few songs and then I have to shut it off.
I consider myself an Indierock guy but I've absolutely no problem with good, decent, well-crafted, original and talented pop music. I'm totally hooked on stuff like The Bird and The Bee, Hexes and Ohs, School of Seven Bells, James Yuill, Juliana Hatfield etc.
There is so much wonderful pop music around, people should really dig a bit deeper and consider supporting smaller, independent acts instead of those mega productions that are created for one sole purpose: making money. But like I said, no personal offense, amidst all those commercial pop music groups and artists there are some gems that are definitely enjoyable. I've always had a weak spot for Kelly Clarkson for exemple and Christina Aguilera has some songs that are written by Linda Perry (ie. Beautiful) that have that extra bit that makes a song interesting.
So all in all, you're not wholly alone
Jeremy

Re: Confession!!
I don't go out of my way to listen to much pop, jazz, or rock these days. However, I do teach a lot of pop and rock material to my students. Some of it's nice, with catchy melodies and words, and some of it just sucks. Well, that's true for any kind of music, so I don't come to any conclusions about it.
There's always good and better stuff out there. Most people don't really look for a new adventure in listening, they just want more of what pleases them, and the commercial music manufacturers know this. It's nice if a song has a great melody or beat, but those things aren't absolutely necessary. Looks and moves are quite enough to sell music these days. But what the heck, even Franz Liszt indulged in showmanship to sell himself and his music.
To misquote Steve Earle, ya gotta wear the right hat in Nashville these days.
Btw, I have the habit of checking out artist bios in Wikipedia. Before you write someone off check out their story, it might be interesting in itself.

I have a 10 year old daughter and as a "reward" for good grades, etc I'll buy her songs on Amazon. Usually it's stuff like Jonas Bros, Miley Cyrus, Lady GaGa, etc. Technically this means I'm funding them but I never buy entire albums and I would never, ever buy a CD.
Re: Confession!!
I thought trevorlawrence would confess why he copied/pasted linuxdsp's message from ardour's board. Disappointed I am
Hey dude, who cares that you are into pop music as well ? whatever makes you happy

Miley Cyrus, good one. Not that I really like Miley Cyrus but one of her backing vocalists happens to be one of my Indierock heroines: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kay_HanleySR wrote:I have a 10 year old daughter and as a "reward" for good grades, etc I'll buy her songs on Amazon. You need to have a bit of everything to be able to judge. It isn't because it is mainstream that it can't be "good". Even got some Florence Foster Jenkins on CD around and chinese 78rpm's (don't even know what is on them!).
