Some history (robo-translate :D):

As part of the STS-30 space expedition, the Magellan automatic station was launched into Venus’s orbit in 1989. The mission’s main goal is radar mapping of the planet. Magellan worked fruitfully until 1994. The station died in the course of maneuvers to lower Venus in the atmosphere, and coil after coil turned lower and deeper to the surface. But on October 12, contact with Magellan was lost.

Within two days after the loss of communication, the station will die in the carbon dioxide atmosphere of Venus with its sulfuric acid clouds, repeating the fate of the orbital block of another American station, Pioneer-Venus 1, which descended from the orbit of the satellite of Venus in October 1992 after 14 years of operation. No one knows exactly how destruction will occur, whether parts of the station will burn, and if some of them will reach the surface.

The total volume of images transmitted by the Magellan AMS to Earth exceeded the results of all previous interplanetary missions of NASA stations combined. The geological survey of Venus was performed with better quality than that achieved for the Earth.
