Tenor Madness - Jazz Improv
I practice small-band jazz with a group of coworkers at lunch time. Today I set up stereo mics in the room and hit the record button just to see how it would turn out.

I used Ardour and added a little bit of reverb just for fun, but didn't do any other processing.

I play the clarinet; my solo comes in at 3:00, and I play along with the brass section at the beginning and the end.turbidh20 wrote:Out of interest, what are you playing Michael?

Depends on the daymerlyn wrote:Good solo.
Do you have three trumpet players in your band?
That day we had two people playing trumpet and one playing flugelhorn.

Re: Tenor Madness - Jazz Improv
Thanks everybody. I'm trying to learn more about live recording. This was just a simple stereo mic setup on the side of a large storage room with no sound treatment and piles of surplus desks, file cabinets, light fixtures, and such. For not putting much effort into it, we were surprised that the recording was not horrible, but of course I want to improve my recording technique.
I feel like the low end is really muddy, which can probably be explained by my above description of the room with all of its hard edges. It might help to drape some blankets around the room to absorb the lows and soften up the sound a bit.
I also want a better blend of the instruments. We have a wind section, a keyboardist with an amp, a guitarist with an amp, and sometimes a percussionist playing a cajon. My friend has a four-channel interface; I'm considering arranging the wind players in a semicircle around two stereo mics, and then putting individual mics in front of the amps (keys and guitar), but that leaves out the cajon player when he shows up, so I'm not sure what to do about that.
Am I on the right track here, or are there some other cheap simple tricks that I can do to improve our recordings?

Wow!
Great stuff Michael and nice solo!! Your lunch band is better than some paid musicians I've seen in clubs! Obviously with improv not every note lands perfectly but we learn by doing, same goes with the recordings... the closer and more separated you can mic the various sections the better your results will be.
