old improv

Post by carlv »

Found some sound files from a long while back that were never mixed. Cleaned 'em up, nipped-tucked (from 6+ down to 3+), then did a rough mix in Mixbus. Got a fun-n-goofy improv out of it. soundcloud.com/cvx-11/fire-ants

That sounds like it was a lot of fun to record. (I think it's more fun to play this genre than to listen to it! :)) Dragonfly is nice, but this might have a little much. How did you do the drums? Are they also vintage or did you make them new?

I am also working on a restoration of an old recording. What tools did you use to clean this one up? Did it need a lot of work? The sound quality is pretty good in your final mixdown, although I am at work so I don't have my good equipment to listen to it on at the moment.

Howdy Milo,

Yep, it's nice to let go and just get nutty every once and a while. Not meant for public consumption, really. The backing track was fully constructed in Reason 2.5*. A mixture of loops, samples (that drum break should be familiar to some) and a little touch of live playing in spots. The guitar parts were recorded via a Behringer V-Amp 2 Amp Modeler** direct line in (no interface @ the time) into Pro Tools LE (a free version),*** then promptly got shelved. For obvious reasons. 8^D The clean-up was done quick-n-easy in Audacity.

And your good equipment should be far better than mine... https://www.whathifi.com/altec-lansing/221/overview. Heck i don't even have an audio system in the car. Bargain basement all the way, baby !

Thanks and cheers !

It's a nice jam. Not for public consumption nowadays. In some other years it was more current to find these kind of jams and there are a lot of recordings about that. In Germany bands like Can and Amon Düül 2 (and much more the original Amon Düül) were a lot about explorations/jams.

On an era-related subject, it looks like magic mushrooms are decriminalized in Denver, Colorado and Oakland, California.

Actually current exploratory jam and hardcore experimental type stuff is out there thriving these days played alongside the oldies, but of course it's niche, you just have to dig to find it. College/university radio is place to go if that's something one would be interested in searching for. I tend to get my fix out of California and Detroit. Sadly, i did loose a show that i've been tuning into for many years now just last year. Luckily there's plenty to fill that void.

Yeah, saw that. Been a long time since dipping my toes in those waters. Not for the faint of heart or of mind.. Though the work being done with folks suffering from PTSD, deep anxiety and the like seems promising.

The fete de musique is happening as i type this. The band is playing "Call Me" by Blondie .. Oooo, now Joan Jett's "I love Rock-n-Roll right now. Gotta go...

Oh, fav jam band these days... Umphrey's McGee: Live @ The Capitol Theatre 10/14/18 (full show)
