ysi-aie "vision beyond time" debut album

Post by joe-b »

My first album (as 'ysi-aie'), "vision beyond time" is now available. Listen at various streaming services or on bandcamp:

Surf/guitar music recorded and mixed entirely on linux.

Thanks for listening.

Good stuff! I like this album a lot. It makes me want to bust out the old Dick Dale album and have another listen.

I have always thought that Bach's Tocatta and Fugue in D minor would make an awesome surf song, especially the fugue. I am a bit intimidated by the thought of doing the arrangement (for bass, guitar x 2, and Hammond organ, I was imagining), so I have never started on it. The double-picked guitar melody in the fourth track on your album sounds like you are going to play the melody from Bach's organ fugue in G minor, and it reminded me of this.

What software did you use?

Thanks for listening.

Everything is synthesized except for the guitars/bass guitar. For sound synthesis I use zynaddsubfx and supercollider. The drums/percussion are done in supercollider and other instruments in zynaddsubfx.

Guitars are recorded dry and run through guitarix.

For tracking, I use MusE. This is mostly because I like its piano roll interface. For mixing and mastering I use Ardour.

I think you're right about this. Make it happen!

A little Khruangbin-y too. This is great stuff!

Nice guitar sounds. Can you share a little about your process/tools?

Thanks.

My previous reply about work flow was delayed (understandably, because my account is new), but I did forget to mention that I relied pretty heavily on the mixing process to shape the guitars, and specifically on Calf plug-ins. EQ, delays, EQ, reverbs, and EQ mostly. In the future, I'm going to try to get the tone closer to what I want in guitarix.

I only discovered Khruangbin recently, but I really like them.

As a fellow Linux surf rocker, can we be friends? :D

I liked the writing and the fact that it doesn't feel like a "genre" record. Bravo!

Thanks a lot! I need to improve all aspects of my music for my next album, but of course I think writing is critical (and probably hardest to improve).

A lot of modern surf music really adheres to that classic sound. I guess that's not a bad thing, but I didn't think it would work with my music.

Thanks!

That's actually good to hear. I regret not spending more time on that track...it was a last minute replacement for a track that didn't quite work out.
