WeSeeNoRack - abstract

Post by jonetsu »

This is a rather abstract piece. Done without any VCV Rack 8)

I found that the challenge here was to be able to put the volume up enough so that listeners will not have to adjust while still retaining the 'dynamics' of the various noises. I reckon that there could be a bit more time spent on spotting various frequency masking that undoubtedly happens here and there.

Sounds interesting, listened with pleasure. The trumpet broke through the chaos

Hegemony VCV Rack has cracked :) What magic spell did you use? Soft?

Yes but moreover, modulation, delay and reverb are playing a large role in sculpting the sound scape with just the right amount needed.

One thing I might try next time around in such a textured piece would be to have the output of a delay also EQed and routed to the sidechain input of another processor, and not necessarily a compressor. So that when a delay hit happens, there would be "something else", different, happening.

I agree - a very interesting collection of sounds. Sort of straddles the line between cacophony and music. What software did you use for this? Was any of the chaos auto-generated or did you program it all?

Thanks for the comment !

4 synths and a sampler were used. Two synths had 'automatic rhythms' eg. an arp and a sequence. The metallic percussion comes from the sequence that was played here and there on a MIDI keyboard. The other percussive element is the arp, also played here and there. The two other synths were used to create a modulated background. Of course, the choice of proper 'mysterious' sounds that can be modulated was important. The sampler was for the trumpet and some additional percussion loop toggles here and there.

If we put actual names, they consist of:

Soundscape:
Icarus - "Psy Ambient1/Arcadia"
Aparillo - "Distant Narrow"

Arp:
Zebra - "Zen Spirits/ARP Nebula"

Seq:
Obscurium - "Duotron"

Trumpet:
Sample Tank 3 - "Trumpet 1"

Occasional looped percs:
Sample Tank 3 - "EDM 6"

Recorded in Bitwig 2.4.3, mixed and mastered in Mixbus32C 5.1 (Xubuntu 18.04). Audio processing was rather minimal but focused on the width of various sounds. u-he MFM2 was used for the occasional percs. MDoubleTracker in a modulated multi-band configuration (within MXXX) was used for the soundscape. TR5 Quad Image was used for the "Duotron" sound. The idea was to leave alone the bass freqs so they can offer an anchor. Same with the highs, with the idea that they could 'ride' over it all. What's modulated was mostly within the midrange.

Cheers.
