Just a chill-out tune

Post by folderol »

The early 1990s was a time I composed quite a lot of music using just a Yamaha SY22 and a Roland Sound Canvas. This was a great combination in it's time, but I soon realised many of the emulation samples were rather poor.

Fast forward to the early 2000s and I was starting to use sound samples available on Linux, and converted many of my tunes to these. However, certain instrument combinations still didn't sound right - particularly flute sounds, which tended to sound rather harsh, and didn't work together well.

Only comparatively recently I worked out how to get much better results, and this tune really shows this with the section starting around the 2 minute mark. I still haven't got it quite right, but think it's 'good enough' for the tune.

So, please take a listen to Sad Angel

Roland Sound Canvas is bad-ass!

What was the change you made that got you better results with Linux? Was it switching to Yoshimi? I'd love to know more about how you got the sounds.

Love the tune, by the way. It feels like a soundtrack.

Thanks :)
Switching to Yoshimi was in itself a significant improvement (especially the choir sounds), but what really made a difference was the realisation that disparate sounds that were not particularly life-like individually, suddenly gel when put together harmonically - as shown be the three 'flutes'.

That's a lovely backdrop youve got there. Fits the title rather well :D
