Well I hope it's true but seems a bit redundant seeing as there is linvst. I would much rather see lv2 support.

I'm quite close to the reaper on linux development, and I haven't heard anything about reaper for linux adding builtin windows vst support. Of course I could be out of the loop for some reason, but...:)

IMO it would be a good thing, as it could conceivably bring a lot of benefits, like faster load times, vst3 support, ease of use, etc.

The main benefit as I see it is that if loading and using Windows VST becomes integrated then it becomes supported. The little problems sometimes here and there (no deal breakers, just annoyances) could eventually be dealt with by the people making the DAW.

Wine (staging or otherwise) is needed, or at least the principle. No-one will re-invent the wheel unless they have very good reasons, so very probably wine will be used and then an additional VST bridge. If a DAW adopts this then it will become supported as part of the product, with precise wine and linvst versions as well as a list of compatible Windows VST. And probably a well-defined Linux distro.

This will depend ont he type of license attributed to wine and linvst. If the license requires that the DAW must expose its proprietary source code if libraries are used...

The task can have many pitfalls so maybe this is all unlikely.

Seems to me a bad idea for anyone producing a Linux DAW to assume responsibility for what plugins work in Wine, that could easily become a support nightmare. That said I do hope that Reaper does add builtin support someday, as it could lead to many improvements for people crazy enough to run windows plugins in reaper for linux (myself included) :)

Maybe not that much of a problem, given a specific Linux distribution and desktop manager and the version number of tested plugins. Making it work would be inside the DAW. It would incur not only development time for adapting wine/linvst within the DAW (if licenses allows) and any other design and development but also for testing a certain range of plugins and adding more as users are asking, while keeping in sync with plugin updates. For s start-up or a small company this would probably add for too much work, but for a larger outfit it could be manageable. But then, is the user base for Linux Reaper large enough to make it worthwhile ?

Windows and Mac OS existed before VST, and it was work to
integrate support within each OS, as it would be in linux.

The people I think are crucial to Reaper achieving built-in
windows vst support all post with regularity at
the reaper linux forum, and some also here, and at kvr,
and they have not publicly mentioned such a work has begun.
(but i'm not an 'insider', by any stretch of imagination)
If that work has begun, I applaud their secrecy, and would be
happily surprised. As I also would be, for LV2 support.
Cheers

Hmmm. That seems to go against my approach of not spending time trying to make a Windows plugin run. Eg. it either works reasonably well now or it's dropped.

On a related topic I heard that Reaper will add native Windows VST support for their Linux offering. Is that right ? That would be a good thing for Bitwig Stu to follow.

Cheers.
In my case, I determine how much learning time to devote towards
certain excellent software that is troublesome to legally register in linux.

In the case of Native Instruments, their software demo limitation
is solely a 30 minute time limit, (15 minutes for Kontakt)
before a plugin like Reactor must be reloaded,
So I had ample time to decide if I would buy things.
I deemed it unethical to keep using the generous demo mode,
without buying things, even though it well fits my simple music.
Thanks to others, I have registered my NI products, and can
add more, with a degree of confidence.

Also 'PM' doesn't mean 'PM, and maybe I'll leak it a little'.

A caveat regarding Kontakt devs and licensing:

Kontakt libraries come in three forms,
1. Those which require the full version of Kontakt to work.
2. Those which will work with the Free Kontakt Player.
Developers pay different rates to Native Instruments,
join the Kontakt world, based on which of the above fiscal scenarios
they choose.
3. Some devs say their product requires the full kontakt app,
but their product will actually work in whole or in part, in the
Kontakt demo mode, for 15 minutes. So a little gray area
existed in the past, which may have been tightened in
recent years. As it stands now, the Kontakt Player,
and full Kontakt demo, are two distinct entities.

IK Multimedia Sampletank is my choice for sampled sounds.
It works much like Yoshimi/zynaddsubfx for easily layering
and effecting sounds, and both it's registration software,
and 'Custom Shop' ala-cart store apps work well in linux-wine-reaper,
or when wrapped by linvst.
Cheers

The topic seems to deviate towards a discussion about installing certain DAW's and support for VST's in some. I respect that it's important to talk about these things. But I just wanted to know why people use Windows software (DAW's) on Linux... :)

This must be first time of the history when internet discussion goes to different direction than conversation starter wants.

I disagree.

(Insert 5-paragraph explanation right here)
