Maybe if you tried updating Wine to Wine-Staging, or it could be some library or other thing to do with your system.

It goes to registration page ok, but firefox apparently can't communicate with Ableton Live, and nothing happens. If forcing browser to be wine ie (not real ie), I got license, but that does not end up to software.

I see.

Seeing as how I'm not buying Abelton Live then I can't test that out.

Maybe check Internet/Firewall or other settings.

Did you try if you can register trial?

I just tried.

No luck.

It seems like the online reg is trying to communicate with Ableton and it's not getting through.

These online reg procedures that a lot are switching to can often not be compatible with Wine or Wine might need an addon.

It could be trying to start a utility to communicate with Ableton that is included in real Windows but not in Wine.

Waves Central needed a Robocopy addon and Native Access needed a feature enabled in Wine before it would run.

I suspect that if it would be possible to use real windows-browser in wine, it might work. However, I was not able to get any windows browser to run this far.

I would include both needless complexity, and privacy invasion
in the 'crappy coding' column. Reaper uses simple drag-n-drop of a text file
to register, same file for the linux and windows version, and the developer
shows up to help in the reaper linux forum because he wants to, instead of hiring
lackeys to dodge support requests. I just registered a windows plugin last night,
and clicking the 'activate' button, and pasting in the serial number
magicallly transformed the demo into the full version. So It just ain't that hard
to make a reg scheme that makes customers lives easy.

Besides, Ableton is so boring to look at, that as a fly went by one of those
showy multi-monitor setups, it fell asleep, crashed into a coffee cup and drowned
You don't deserve Ableton, and neither does your son.
Take that as a compliment!

And with all the frequent Reaper rc versions, I don't often bother with the drag-n-drop,
as the music don't care, and the demo nag lag is used to ponder
what I'm about to attempt, for a few peaceful seconds, before the mayhem begins
Good luck!

That might be totally true, but you missed the point: there is nice tutorial videos for making complete EDM track, made with ableton.
If someone can point such complete tutorial, including 'how to make edm / pop / melodical techno' part. Tutorial for program itself is not enough. My son can use lmms, but lacking part is 'how do I make music for my genre'.

And yes, registration can be made easy, but big player like Ableton, offering time-limited trial has made it this way, and I think I mostly understand why.

I don't think reaper is a replacement for ableton for certain tasks but if you need it just for composition then I think reaper is actually much more powerful. It's not as simple to use though.

I will have a look later for you regarding EDM but the reaper blog channel is excellent, it showcases a lot of the scripts/tools and explains how to install them, I even saw one the other day that creates an ableton-like grid so you jam your clips in real time and record the output.

The thing about finding tutorials to make EDM is that there are so many styles and so many ways of working. Even in ableton you will see tutorials from well known producers making beats by moving audio samples on the arrange page, each drum sound on a different track. Then you see others making them as a loop in the session view in midi using a multisampler. The former way in reaper is exactly the same (drag in samples, edit envelopes and arrange), the latter is just a case of creating a midi clip and using a sampler (I think reaper comes with a multisampler).

I'm not sure a very detailed tutorial is needed about the genre, if you know how to create midi tracks and move audio samples around then 'how to make techno' is more a case of learning what kind of sounds to use and what arrangements work best.

There are quite a lot of guides:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LF4a-2lX51U - I thought this one was great because it shows you how to set things up. This is one thing I've noticed with reaper, it is incredibly customisable but the defaults don't suit everyone or every kind of task.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AH_6cHk8eg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wK6ZY2X ... SPyW8ZLOyE - this looks long and comprehensive but it's made for windows so VSTs used will be different obviously, same principles though.

There's a lot around though, might have to search for the best one or closest approach you want - https://www.youtube.com/results?search_ ... onic+music

I don't know if it's @Topic. Would https://wiki.winehq.org/Winetricks, https://www.playonlinux.com/en/ be a help?

At least for quick look, they look promising.

The linux version of U-he Hive may be the quintessential EDM choice,
in the $150 range, but some 3000 presets are available,
between the factory set, and those donated freely by Hive users.

Free/affordable instruments include U-he TyrellN6 and Podolski,
with magazineware Beatzille/BazilleCM, (lite versions of Bazille)
and Podolski.
There are 20 how-2 videos for BazilleCM with the CM digital magazine
which is $5 from zinio.com, downloads of the dvd content are from filesilo.com,
(CM digital 'magazine ownership' is verified by finding a word from a header
in a magazine article, viewed from zinio's reader app.) This months cover dvd #257
features a great version of the Thorn synth, probably a good EDM choice)
Also, the powerhouse Fathom synth has a free mono release, and the full version
is due for a $12 sale real real soon. These work in reaper/wine,
might work via linvst/airwave wrappers, and the linux synths work in
most linux hosts.

Linux RaveGenerator2, and discoDSP's linux OB-xd version, are also free,
and with effects from rakarrack, and Guitarix, can also enhance the genre.
Matt Tytels' Helm is a free cross-platform powerhouse, a popular synth contest
entry songs are here: https://sites.google.com/site/kvrosc/osc-90-helm

There is a powerhouse synth called Wiggle, that I'm sure your son would love,
and it's many features all seem to work fine in Reaper/wine. Wiggle has
unrestricted 20 minute demo sessions to test/learn with, and I believe the 500+ sounds
are in the EDM range. It's only $50 at the moment, at pluginboutique.com
Summer rocks for the chilllldrennnnn!

You missed the point totally, thing was 'have hands-on tutorial for making music of desired genre, and get that software running on linux'

It is @topic. Wineticks used for getting enough libs. Playonlinux tried slightly, did not work with my wine version (I had winehq version, it expected older), but might be worth trying. Althou also on playonlinux discussions people were complaining about authorization.

Why not use Bitwig instead of Ableton?

There is a Linuxversion (+Demo) and lots of Tutorials on Youtube.

Does not have fully functional trial version, so experimenting 'is this my next hobby' requires spending $$$.
