Interested ? (jam112)

Post by jonetsu »

Here is it so far, with just about no mixing, straight from the forge. A smooth one.

https://soundcloud.com/nominal6/test-jam112

If interested then I can generate wav audio tracks and MIDI tracks. For the MIDI tracks you can substitute any synth plugin, if you wish to redo/expand. The synths that were used are: Dark Zebra and Bazille. The MIDI tracks will allow to see quickly which notes are played. Notes about the guitar chords and melody will also be given. Any synth expansion/modification can be saved as MIDI. Then I will load the MIDI and adjust the synth sounds.

The tracks can be reorganized (there is currently no organization whatsoever, it's just an improv) as to show some direction, sounds can be added, removed, audio/MIDI tracks can be added, drums, electric fuzz guitar, balalika, didgeroo, etc, etc, etc. But no polka.

If not interested, that's very fine. Please do not feel obliged. I have dozens and dozens of such improvs standing by. All sharing would be done using MIDI and audio files. I'm not inclined to take software project files.

Yes I am interested, although I cannot promise to get to work, many projects, limited resources, the most limiting factor being cloudy skies over my 75Watts only solar panel currently.
Since I do not have your synths, I would prefer rendered audio for these tracks, optionally with the midi to see how how far I can get with the common free linux synths. Personally I wouldn't mind compressed audio for smaller files, another option is to just render loops or repeated ranges once and .et me do the puzzle. 100-300MB total would feel alright with me, hi-res wav always remains an option should things get serious. Exact BPM essential for importing. I like the song, a good one to try collaboration on.

Yes, either the full Arranger length (Bitwig terminology) or the clips themselves, open to be looped again in any DAW. There's no Arranger-only sound takes at the moment, it's all clips. Receiving new material would follow the same approach. I will give audio (probably wav), MIDI and written notes. as for the synths, the MIDI data will allow for any substitution. For new synth tracks/loops the same would go on: audio and MIDI data. So that it would be possible here to substitute another synth if needed and if not, use the original audio. For guitar, and specifically improvisation, there would be no need to write down the notes but, any prominent chords could be written down as anchor points. I use TAB and written text notes (emacs).

There can be plenty of rules to this kind of thing but I prefer to just go on and see what happens and adjust along the way.

I'll put the files shortly on dropbox. Would you prefer clips or full actual length ?

Good thing it's summer: plenty of sun to power up the machinery !

Cheers.

Same here. Let's try full length audios (+ optionally MIDI) if it can stay below the 300MB total, otherwise clips. I usually work in 44.1kHz because I'm afraid that i.e. 98kHz would blast my small laptops resources too soon, but if that's very important, I could try. And if you agree, 16bit wav or flac would be enough.

Personally, I don't need notation, since my ear is my strength, at best a mix chart if fx like i.e. reversing have been done.

And don't feel pressed to do anything at all, (except giving the exact BPM maybe) , I did hear 1 or 2 things I'd want to edit, but I could still come up with some useable clips for you to import, by just playing along to the soundcloud version, imported into my DAW naturally.

So here it is at 189 MB, audio, MIDI and brief notes. It is 44.1KHz although the wav files are 24 bit if I'not mistaken. All files are the full length as per the Soundcloud entry. Not sure if this is the best way, perhaps clips could be better. I think I will export the clips and upload them anyways, a bit later. Might be useful to re-arrange things around. The notes file contains BPM plus guitar notes.

Let me know if the link works well. Not too familiar yet with dropbox.

No FX were used, apart from what the synths offers. The synths are Bazille and ZHZ (Dark Zebra). Please substitute with other synths/sounds. You may start with pads as they all revolve around atmospheric scapes. Even the ZHZ-melody is kind of atmospheric. 'Shiraki' is the name of the acoustic guitar. Other audio tracks are bass, drums, and some atmospheric sounds.

I never use notation. Cannot read and will not learn. I also work by ear.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers.

Downloading worked fine, the rest I'll have to see at home, since my phone doesn't know about bzip and tar, and probably not about 24bit wav, neither. (that, btw., was the reason why ambicumber:skura bura didn't work for me as a download. On the laptop, it played. 95MB for 4:15 min, they had uploaded studio quality....)

A trick: if you substitute the dl=0 for a dl=1 in the url that dropbox generates for your file, it becomes a direct download link - then the addressee doesn't need to figure out how to click away the invitation to make/sign in to an account and transfer the file there. You can always check how a link works, in a private browser tab.

Awesome piece, jonetsu! Love it!

I'd like to play a (real, not virtual) fretless bass into that - and re-upload that to you via Soundcloud. Would that be ok?

Also, since you've put it under CC, I suppose I can share this via my own blog as well?

Cheers,
Wolfgang

Ok; re-uploaded it to my dropbox (the complete Ardour session in 48k):

https://www.dropbox.com/s/yzi1550drff0xwd/jam112.zip

I just played the same bass line you had - if you'd like something else instead, I could also try that. Still not mixed; in case you don't use Ardour, you'll find my (mono) bass in its 'interchange' folder. I also added a screenshot from my session:

See also on my blog.

Hallo Wolfgang,

Sehr schön ! Vielen Dank ! For the time being, can you export only the bass track as a wav file so I can see about incorporating it to the work in progress. Then I would update the Soundcloud file and the package of files with the new bass line and we continue from there.

I am using Mixbus 32C, so I'm not really inclined, despite similarities between Ardour and Mixbus, to laod an entire session. I prefer to incorporate additions as audio files instead. I find it much simpler.

And of course, if you come up with a variation on the bass line, or anything else, it would be very welcomed. With forestandgarden and others, let's see where this goes.

Tschüß.

This works nicely. Please share any additions, modifications etc to the piece as audio files (and MIDI when appropriate) so I can incorporate them back and update project files.

Cheers.

The piece so far might be sounding like the middle part of something. Like the response to a previous musical statement. If that makes sense, what could be the music that leads to what we hear today ? 8)

Nice that this is taking off!

I'm also looking forward to having the fretless bass as a separate 1 track only upload. Or maybe a few alternate tracks, like e.g. one where the fretless slides from b to G, or a few solo phrases higher up... One remark: I had heard one place where there is some confusion (to me) in the bass area, the bass playing one note and one of the synths another one also in the bass range, but not really complementary (I think it's D on the bass vs. E on the synth). That happens at around 0:50-0:51 and probably repeats. I haven't had the time to properly audition track by track yet, but changing one of the 'conflicting' notes and having a go at editing the guitar timing were the two things I wanted to do first.

Interesting, I also had begun to look at the track as a piece of something larger, but I hadn't really decided if something would go before or after it. Right at this moment, I'm inclined to muse about a song that this wood be the chorus to - staying instrumental. But for the moment I'm on a visit.

Moin moin an Alle, die das versteh'n :)

Jens

P.S: I cannot download the whole (new) project file to extract the bass line here at my host, but the hacker in me couldn't resist extracting the mix from wjl's blog, here https://www.dropbox.com/s/79iju59r735sf ... n.ogg?dl=1

I will still be waiting for Wolfgang to upload the bass track only, so that I generate new project files and an updated soundcloud mix.

Thanks for the remark on neighbouring bass sounds ! I'll look at that when Wolfgang's bass line is incorporated.

For the sake of convenience, do you think loop files could be useful ?

There's also a semi-blind lady from Germany who is interested in the project. Her name is Jeanette and she's on the Linux Audio mailing list, although the correspondance about this project is private.

Moin moin gleichweise ! 8)

Schönes Wochenende.

Hi all,

here's my fretless as a single wav (zipped) file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/5cxd09zz4y2x8 ... l%29-1.zip

And yes, I also recognized that there's a conflicting bass note somewhere in the whole (didn't dig in deeper to identify it) - but in this version I stuck to your original bass line which I just replaced with mine (muted yours, exported the result for my own blog).

I can start again working on it later. Got that fretless bass since last Monday, after a 35 year hiatus (or so), so don't expect Palladino-style quality. But I'll do my best ;-)

Cheers,
Wolfgang

P.S.: deleting the old complete Ardour export from my dropbox - it's quite big...
P.P.S.: Oh, forgot - my audio is at 48kHz, because that's just my current setup (doing some audio for video work). You can convert it back to 44.1kHz using Audacity if you need to...

Thanks.

As far as Ardour is concerned, it will convert all imported audio to its session rate. Audacity (or a quick ffmpeg line a terminal) are needed for mp3 .
