I gave up and used another computer and everything works fine. My theory was that while my Dell laptop had 5 USB ports (both 2.0 and 3.0) Ubuntu Studio 16. 04 was treating them all as 3.0

I would love to see this answered.

Hi,

Slightly OT, but last weekend I played a gig and the sound guy was using a VSL1818 as the live mixer with a Windows box (yes, pretty unorthodox), long story short we set up and he was getting this horrible digital distortion which was eventually traced to USB-3 ports on his computer, a switch to a USB-2 port luckily solved the issue instantly... :roll:

This is not just a Linux issue

Presonus will tell you functionally is sketchy at best on 3.0 USB regardless of platform.

I'm suggesting that Ubuntu Studio is not recognizeing USB 2.0 ports correctly.

Yes, that's exactly what i got when i tried the audiobox1818VSL, even when i plugged it on USB2.0 ports, because my laptop actually hosts all his usb ports, 2.0 or 3.0 on a USB3.0 hub...

I used "lsusb"and in that list some ports where 2.0 some 3.0, but then again they still may be treated as 3.0 ports.

Is there a way to force the computer to make all ports 2.0?
(I've seen someone doing it here but can't find the thread...)

Hans

ps.

I had the problem with both 14.04 and 16.04 Kubuntus

Maybe you can disable xkci or usb3 in your BIOS...
and yes, there is a way to reconfigure usb ports, but (1) I cound't find the link back, sorry... and (2) it disn't work in my case, even all port configured as USB2, they were still using the buggy xhci...

You mentioned earlier you send your Presonus back, did you finally do that?
What are you using now?

I thought, would it be possible to "go back in time", like say a half a year, have everything installed with the versions that where up-to-date then. and see from there?
I've found a changlog but this is over my head as an enduser...

I'm using a Komplete Audio 6 now, working perfectly so far.
Only 4 analog inputs, and preamps are definitely not the presonus ones, but at least it's working !

I've installed KXstudio 14.04 again.
I want to try to install an older kernel-version, because I think that is the reason why it isn't working anymore.
What will be the safest way to do so?
I've backed up all my stuff and this is a fresh install so no real harm can be done, I only want my card (along with the other presonus users) to be working again.

An other thought is, will changing to Debain stable be a better options, because the use older (more tested) stuff?

I dusted off my old usb 2.0 only laptop and made a fresh Kubuntu 16.04 with KXstudio Repo's install and everything seems to be working fine.
I think the problem arises when there is one or more usb 3.0 port in the computer.
This wasn't an issue till a couple of months ago, so I don't know what is causing the trouble (and how to solve it...)

For now it's solved but I'm a bit worried what to do if my old laptop will break down....

A long shot maybe, but do not hesitate to notify the kernel dev teams that there's something buggy with usb3 management, with a way to reproduce the regression... I did that already, but it might "up" the subject ;)

Hi guys, I have also the AudioBox 1818VSL with my ubuntu 14.04. Out of the box, it was recognized by the system but there was no output with a lot XRUNs in jack. Updating the firmware (download and install the current driver from PreSonus) with a windows laptop fixed the problem, and it was running perfectly! After a laptop restart with the Audiobox on, the outputs where muted and I couldn't turn them on, since the alsamixer didn't provide the option to mute/unmute. I am posting my solution since this was very frustrated and costed me a concert!!!

You have to change the configuration file manually. Type in the terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /var/lib/alsa/asound.state
(or whatever text editor you have)

find the VSL. It looks like this:

Code: Select all

state.VSL {
	control.1 {
		iface MIXER
		name 'AudioBox 1818 VSL MIDI Out Playback Switch'
		value.0 true
		value.1 true
		value.2 true
		value.3 true
		value.4 true
		value.5 true
		value.6 true
		value.7 true
		value.8 true
		value.9 true
		value.10 true
		value.11 true
		value.12 true
		value.13 true
		value.14 true
		value.15 true
		comment {
			access 'read write'
			type BOOLEAN
			count 16
		}
	}
	control.2 {
		iface MIXER
		name 'AudioBox 1818 VSL MIDI Out Playback Switch'
		index 1
		value true
		comment {
			access 'read write'
			type BOOLEAN
			count 1
		}
	}

...
if these values are "false" then change them to "true". Save the configuration file and then type:

Code: Select all

sudo alsactl nrestore
I hope this can solve this stupid problem for you.

Cheers!

Hey all, slightly offtopic here, but, I have Audiobox 44 with Kxstudio 14.04, was working fine untill I got my Alesis VI61 Midi keyboard plugged in on USB 2 and poof..., the Audiobox dissapeared, I mean it would not appear in audio settings nor on Jack (Cadence). No sound at all from it either.

Any clues?
Thnx

Hmm I'd start with a lsusb, but it won't solve anything, just to check if the device is still detected..

i remember there was something buggy with usb3 ports/drivers
and on my first laptop even the usb2 ports where managed by a usb3 driver apparently.
i'm sorry i can't help you investigate any further...
