Presonus Quantum Thunderbolt

Post by lootre »

Hi everybody,

I'm interested in buying this interface, but I cannot find any information about if it runs on Linux (more specifically Ubuntustudio).
https://www.presonus.com/products/Quantum

This device is out since end of 2017. Has anybody already tested it?

Thank you very much.

No, it won't work.

Thunderbolt takes you back to the times when every interface required its own propriatery driver.
If you're on linux, avoid it like the plague.

Didn't they want to spread it? I don't know if that is part of the topic, but there was something ....

This driver is somewhat equivalent to the USB host controller driver for USB.
What it does is reserve the PCIe lines and make the device visible to the system (i.e. can be seen with lspci).
For the device to actually work, it requires a device specific proprietarty driver.

Thank you all for your answers!

So I guess I'll save my money and spend on something more functioning.

Linux supports Thunderbolt, but no one has written a Linux driver for a Thunderbolt audio interface (yet).
