Scarlett 8i6 in Ubuntu 18

Post by liz »

Hi all, I'm a long time producer, and a programmer, but linux definitely isn't my main thing. I recently installed Ubuntu 18 from scratch on what is to be my studio PC, and am trying to get it to work with my Focusrite Scarlett 8i6.

Ultimately I want to get it working with Ardour so I can do multi-channel recording, but I'm open to suggestions as well re: different (free) DAWs, or distros (I've seen some people use Mint with Scarlett hardware). I recall getting input to track to Ardour via the 8i6, but no output coming through my speakers out of the 8i6 (I have a 5.1 system with 3 1/8" jacks that are converted to dual RCA that are converted to stereo 1/4", I've confirmed the speakers work).

I think the place to start is probably in getting the 8i6 to function properly as my soundcard, but I'm not sure where to start. I've poked around a number of things that came up from searches, including pavucontrol, and qjackctl(the latter of which I am very confused about how to use). I've turned the machine's soundcard off in the configuration in pavucontrol, as well as HDMI audio, and can see playback occurring via the 8i6 when I let spotify run in the background, or use the audio testing feature in the audio setup, but again there is no actual output to speakers. I've tried plugging the speakers into the headphone jack, as well as each output jack, to no avail. I've tried plugging and unplugging the 8i6 a number of times as some search results suggest.

Sorry if this is too jumbled, I'd really appreciate if someone could suggest a starting point for me going forward. Thanks!

edit: I was able to get audio in to track to Audacity, not Ardour, if it matters for diagnosing what's up here. I am still able to track to Audacity (and no output through speakers with the Scarlett 8i6, though various levels show sound is passing through somewhere)

still struggling, no output to speakers, would appreciate some help! am I asking the wrong questions?

looked up some diagnostic commands people have asked other 8i6 users to run, here are the outputs:

I have another Scarlett Focusrite, and if I recall correctly, the outputs were muted by default. I'd try opening a mixer program (like QasMixer; it was a little more legible for me than AlsaMixer, with the same functionality) and see if that elucidates anything. In QasMixer I remember that I had to "jiggle" the volume controls... ie, they seemed to be set at 0db, but I had to move them to get the value recognized.

If you don' t need many inputs then use Scarlett Solo, 2i2, 2i4. They don't have a builtin mixer that can make trouble.

No mixer, no cry.

Anyone have experience with the Scarlett 8i6 (3rdgen)? I'm hoping the newer models are easier to use.
