Reaper crashed Jack, now my USB sound card isn't recognized [SOLVED]

Post by ZestieBumwhig »

I just got the Scarlett 18i20 (1st Gen) and was trying to set up the ART Tube Opto 8 via ADAT to have 16 ins and outs. The Scarlett was working just fine (though I'd only just started testing it), but when I tried to change Reaper to use 16 inputs and outputs, it crashed, and took Jack down with it.

No problem, I thought, I'll start again... but now when I try to start Jack, my Scarlett does not even appear as an option.

I wish I copied the logs, but QJackCTL messages did say something about "removing USB (Scarlett)". So is it now not in a list?

output of lsusb (when the Scarlett is plugged in):

Code: Select all

I am so sad. I would love some help. Perhaps there's a config file that has now commented out the entry for my Scarlett? I'm using AVLinux 2018.

Can you make a test with a live image of e.g. AVlinux? Maybe the interface is broken?

Either that or plug it into a different computer. It would be really weird if a JACK crash ruined the hardware.

OK, thanks folks, it's working now. I don't know what changed (there's a slight chance I hadn't power-cycled the Scarlett, but I definitely restarted the computer, and tried all my USB ports.) Someone else mentioned power-cycling followed by port switching... maybe that did it?

That AVLinux live-boot test was a really good idea, and I must remember that option.

Anyway... thanks again.

That's great to hear. I've been thinking about upgrading to one of the bigger Scarletts (I'm using the 2i4), and this conversation made me a little nervous!

Well, yes, don't let my frantic setback discourage you! I haven't had any issues since. I'm using that ART 8x8 via ADAT lightpipe, and it's running smoothly. QasMixer (also in the repos) does seem better than alsamixer for navigating the 18i20's relatively massive channel count/routing options.
