Synthesizer with build-in USB-MIDI/Audio-Interface

Post by KuroNeko »

Hi Folks!

Im looking for a new hardware-synthesizer with build-in Audio-/MIDI-Interface supported by LINUX.
So, does anyone have experience with the following synthesizers?

- Yamaha MOXF
- Yamaha MX61
- Roland FA06
- Roland Juno DS
- Korg Krome
- Korg Kros

Unfurtunally I read nothing positiv about supporting both(!) interfaces in the internet (especially at Yamaha).
I only found an old post about the generic MIDI-Driver on the Ronald FA06, whitch seems to work. :?

So can anyone tell me some newer (and better) informations about the hardwaresupport in LINUX or
suggest a synthesizer with USB-MIDI/Audio-Interface working with LINUX? :P
For me it is OK if the Audio-Interface supports 1 Stereo-Tracks for recording and one for playback.
(My system: ACER TravelmateB and UBUNTU STUDIO 16.04.3)

Thanks a lot!

USB audio capabilitiy is uncommon feature on synths (unlike USB midi).
it's mainly because coexisting of a few USB audio interfaces or USB with non-USB audio interfaces in one system considered troublesome (major synchronization issues etc).

Hello chaocrator and thank you, for our answer.
I was hoping that meanwhile somebody found a workaround or even programmed a driver for one of these synths.

Because, technical it seems to be the same to take an audio-interface and a MIDI-interface (with generic drivers)
connect both to a synthesizer and to an USB-hub and plug the hub-output on the laptop.
But unfortunally it seems that no synthesizer-manufacturer chose a solution like this.

So I realy have to buy (and handle) two interfaces and a hub...? :(

I'm not sure that I quite follow what you're trying to do, but you could get an interface that handles audio + midi, like Scarlett 2i4 (That's what I use with no driver issues on Linux). Wire the midi output from the Scarlett to your hardware synth, and wire its audio output back into the Scarlett. There's no reason that you need to go with two interfaces, or even use a USB hub (along with whatever latency increase you might get from the hub).

Hmm - it looks like it is not possible to use one of these synthesizers for audio- and MIDI-recording without extra epuipment!?!?
I'm shure the Scarletl 2|4 is a good solution for this problem - but it costs much more than a windows7 licence.
And windows offers much more possibilities in hard- and software.

So I think, in that case everyone has to make his own decision.

So you want to use your synth as an USB audio interface? Nobody does that.

MIDI :Tested myself: DSI REV2, P6, P12 and, Roland Integra 7 all work.
Devices not being USB MDI compliant are becoming very rare.
You can always plug a USB/MIDI interface via MIDI DIN in between, like the 2x2, 4x4 or a Mio

Audio: Very few Synths have USB Audio.
Roland AIRA products all support audio over USB, but Mr Roland decided to make it not USB Audio class compliant,
Don't know of any Synth that is USB Audio class compliant.
Linux sees my Aira TR-8 as an audio device but ALSA/Jack won't work.

Solution: Get a Multi channel Audio interface and use MIDI over USB/DIN. This is I think what everyone else does.

Roland devices are not class compliant and Roland does not make Linux drivers. AFAIK the device is useless in Linux.
