Hi
I want to dedicate an old laptop to Guitarix. Does any know of a decent inexpensive USB audio dongle? It would only need a mono in, but obviously the output musn't be too noisy. There are loads of cheap ones out there, the problem is which; expensive is not an option
Thanks in advance
Guy

on ebay you find countless 5 Dollar China copies of the Behringer guitar link. I once bought one of these. Worked well with guitarix - all plug and play! - sounded great but with a little more noise floor than higher end devices. It wouldn't be a problem in a band mix though (a real amplifier can be much noiser still;)

Re: Decent USB dongle for Guitarix
The cheapo Guitarlink clone cable I tried has a Cmedia audio chipset. It doesn't work too well. Latency was poor'ish and there are some other weird problems with it developing a buzz after some time which can only be killed by restarting jack.
The Behringer UCG102 may be a better option, but I haven't tried it myself.
For a bit more money something like a s/h Edirol UA-25 works great.

Look for a used Fender Mustang 1 V1 usb amp, for $50 or less,English Guy wrote:Hi

lots of beginners sell these when they advance, or quit. You'll have usb to your computer,
as well as line-level from the headphone combo jack. They are small, easy to fit,
easy to move. And are quite amazing when you dial in, or download some presets.
24 presets can be accessed from the main dial, and a linux editor called 'Plug'
works well for making sounds from the built-in amp models and effects.
(a Mustang 1 V2 is better, new ones are $120 when not on sale.)
Re: Decent USB dongle for Guitarix
I am ususally buying bottom-of-the-barrel cheap stuff. In my experience its mostly quality control that makes these inexpensive. So you might get lucky and get one that works very well, or you might get one that works terribly. For the most part I think they're all about the same brand wise. Mine is just called "USB Guitar Link." and was under $10 on amazon.com. I don't use it as my primary interface but its great for quick setups and messing around.
