obligatory Which interface?

Post by Dr.Piwi »

Like so many here I turn to this place to ask what to buy.
We recently got our first baby so I need something that allows me to plug a guitar in so that I can play without too much noise.
I have a very old Tascam US122 that seems to be too old to still work reliably, so I want a more recent similar kind of interface:
1 or 2 inputs, midi and not too expensive.
I want the midi as it allows me to control my boss GT-8.

I've been looking around and there are a few interfaces that seem to do most of the things I want are :
The Alesis CORE1 but that one does not have a midi interface.
The Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 seems to do all it needs to do
The Presonus Audiobox 22VSL
Roland UA-22 Duo-Capture EX

Which of these are known to work with ALSA/ Jack ?
I'm running only Linux and I do not want to dual boot to be able to use all of the extra features.
Thanks for the help.

Scarlett +1 (I have a very similar 2i2 which works great for guitar).
Anything Roland sounds more like trouble.
No experience with the others.

A bit on the high side of the price range, but you may want to include this one as well in your review (no first hand experience, but it has rather good reputation on Linux):

There's also a support statement, which doesn't hurt:

Native Instruments 'Komplete Audo 6' is reported to work
great in linux, with high quality results, for a good price.
You'll get a lite version of Guitar Rig bundled, providing
a very nice effects rack to receive various tones from 'The Boss',
if you setup wineasio.

Another cheap but excellent alternative (sans the midi)
is a Fender Mustang 1 (Version 1) usb amp/interface,
around $60 used, an app called Plug lets you edit/save
24 presets., based on classic Fender amp models,
and some fine effects.

If the Boss has an 'instrument out', you can pre-amp the Mustangs
signal with some great energies.

Behringer UMC404 works (don't know about the HD model)
Edirol UA-25 works (not in production but can be found s/h)
Some Focal / 20.04 audio packages and resources https://midistudio.groups.io/g/linuxaudio

+1 on the KA6, mine has worked flawlessly plugged into a variety of desktops and laptops, and even an EeePC :)
Definitely a case of "Just Works".

I tested the Alesis Core1: it works. Recording and monitoring.
There is a bit of latency, but definitively usable. (it also works on Android)

Maybe I'm late to this party, but I'm using Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 1st gen for midi in, mic in, and studio speakers. I've had no trouble with it. I think I found it used on reverb.com for around $120 or so.

I think we're all late to this party, the thread is 2 years old...

Probably time to make a new one if we're going to talk about this. :)
