Have you tried Ardour to record your tracks ? (more complicated but more pro than audacity)

I will try it after reading the tutorials and a round of youtubing because it's very counterintuitive. audacity is a three steps program:1. plug the mic,2. play rec, 3. profit! :lol:

a2jmidid pkg? I use this for say qsampler(that only does jack midi, not alsa midi), for routing midi from an external keyboard to qsampler software synth. I recall having to hook the alsa midi in to the 'Midi Through' in qjackctl.
