Are we really going to argue over this?
Mike said put it wherever you think it fits, so I think there is no need to be rude... :|

I think this is completely valid Linux audio news and not advertising.
There is a very hostile tone towards Mike that is unfortunate and I would personally like to see all Linux audio related news presented in this thread.

I use a lot of open source plugins and also a lot of commercial ones too. I own most of Mikes LinuxDSP plugins so this serves as a reminder to check out whats going on at OverToneDSP.

Have no idea who is moderating this thread but cast my vote to keep commercial news in this thread too..

There have been some commercial posts in the past, including commercial software, here or in the subforums (daw, plugins, ...). So either mods change the rules, either you keep calm and quiet. Mike has no bad intentions.

There is no need to change the rules, just check the report button for any post here, and check the first entry in the report reason.
The reported message has the only purpose to advertise for a website or a other product
This is a common case in most forums, and usually used to report spam.
Now, no-one said the Mike is a spammer, but at least it still is a advertise for a commercial product, with the goal to selling more of them.
For those kind of messages we've added the marketplace, after a lot of discussions about that here.
And, to be honest, I didn't see were I'm rude to mike, I just commit my opinion, and I believe I do it in a friendly way.

The question which leaves after accepting posts like this here, will be, were would you put the border, from which point on a message will be considered as "Spam". Will you accept news about some commercial windows/MAC daw's or plugins here? Will you accept messages about new Hardware from the vendors who would sell them, even if they don't run on linux, or maybe run on linux? Promoting new shoes?
So were do you think the borderline should be putted?

I'm pretty sure we'll get a couple of different opinions here, and for sure, every one believes he/she has the only valid argument for his opinion.

Well, I think you've been friendly in a very "Richard Stallman" way...

Yes, please use the 'report' button rather than posting angry replies - the moderators don't see everything.

Indeed this forum has always been intended to serve a broad audience, with a bias towards using FLOSS on Linux, but also discussing non-FLOSS software and even sometimes diverging into non-Linux (though then mostly FLOSS) targets.

There is no strict 'thou shalt not discuss commercial software outside of the marketplace subforum' rule. The above post is most definitely on-topic for this forum, and both 'news' and 'marketplace' seem suitable subforums.

'marketplace' is a bit more specific, so I have a slight preference to have it there - I'll move it.

Is it even useful to have a 'news' subforum at all? Wouldn't all news items have a place in other more specific subforums? Perhaps we should retire the 'news' subforum entirely?

Well, not exactly rude, but your first post here did come off a bit angry ;). Perhaps not intended - text is a funny medium like that.

It is usually quite obvious (and the above post is obviously on-topic for this forum, though perhaps fits better in the Marketplace subforum). When it is not obvious, the moderators will make a case-by-case decision.

@mike: would you like this topic to be split, to separate the 'where does this topic belong' thread from the actual announcement?

I think that:
  • "Linux Music News" forum should be renamed to "Libre Linux Music News".
  • "Proprietary Linux Music News" forum should be added to the "Linux Music News" group.
  • "Marketplace" forum should be moved to "Linux Music News" group, too.
