Mixbus 4 for $29.95 til Nov. 5th
The more advanced version is $99.95 in the same sale period.
A good way to support Ardour, and build your own production tool collection.

I sprang for the 4.2 update, and it's quite an improvement over 3.7,
especially in scanning vst plugins from airwave or linvst.

Airwave? You use Airwave with Mixbus? What about this https://github.com/phantom-code/airwave/issues/69 ?

Re: Mixbus 4 for $29.95 til Nov. 5th
I wouldn't call it 'using airwave in mixbus', but I have a bunch of .so files from airwave
in the vst path .vst/air that Mixbus scanned, and there they were, Synthmaster One,
Dimension Pro, even the old Herc's Abakos. Qtractor is also making progress with
using wrapped vsts. What times we live in!
As it is, I need to get the most recent linvst, and make new and separate scan paths,
so I can tell which ones are wrapped by which, much easier, as I'd hate to serve disinformation.
But it's hard to justify an hour or two, with so many sounds and effects waiting to get fired up.
I already got hooked by Reaktor's Arpaeras moving Zebralette chimes into rakarrack.
Sleeping through breakfast yet again...

Yeah, Ardour/Mixbus does scan and find them, and they will do whatever it is that they do, but if you use them and hide their window and/or change your mind and delete them from the plugin stack, the whole shebang freezes and you have to kill it.

I would agree, buying mixbus was my biggest waste of money for a long time.

Re: Mixbus 4 for $29.95 til Nov. 5th
I've seen no indications from ardour team members that they are
held hostage by Harrison Consoles employees, or are unhappy to be
involved in what is at some level, a joint venture. If you have public proof
to the contrary, put up the team member quotes, and free me from my delusions
The day I bought mixbus, I actually was attempting an ardour donation,
but the the ardour website stubornly refused to function, so on a whim,
I went to the commercial site of 'Ardour Pro', aka Mixbus,
and the purchase transaction was professionally handled.
Mixbus has had several updates since I first bought it, and shows no signs
of approaching EOL status.
It should be noted that I'm not even an ardour user, but
was donating because I admire Paul's longevity and droll humour,
and the many plugins from X42, and I was fully aware that
Mixbus itself still had plenty of kinks to work out, and features to add,
so I had pretty low expectations, and was happily surprised as
my initial session loaded Zebra2, Discovery Pro, and a bunch of other
plugins, and produced a nicely balanced recording with it's defaults.
The new version is one it's makers can be pleased with, and the best
is yet to come.
I never expect any 'daw' to be _the one_ so I use linux as the daw,
and enjoy the variety and quality of the parts within, Mixbus included.

Re: Mixbus 4 for $29.95 til Nov. 5th
Disclaimer: I did not give Mixbus a fair try. (Take what I say with a huge grain of salt.) But... I like Ardour (as a DAW) much better. The use of buses seemed limited to me. You cannot route the pre-created mixbuses however you'd like.
Now, I suppose you buy if for the "sound", i.e., the built in EQ, compressor, etc. I hear that they are really good, but I did not even get to try them, as I could not route the tracks and buses how I am used to. At the end, I was sorry I did not save the money to buy the Overtone DSP plugins. (And now I can't buy them either... Hopefully their "disappearance" is only temporary.)
Probably Mixbus deserved a better try, but it got on the way of my work flow (and I am a bit OCD).

To each his own. Ardour has my respect and appreciation, but for me Mixbus is miles ahead.
Maybe it's just because I'm old and the mixing section feels familiar and intuitive. The built-in tools do indeed sound really good and and are already set up--I rarely feel the need to audition a bunch of EQ and compressor plugins like I do in Ardour. The value for me is getting more done in a shorter amount of time. $30 is not as good as free, but there are worse things to spend your money on.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, mixbus is very nice but not being able to set up a proper stereo aux return is ridiculous. I do like it and would love to use it but this crippling makes it useless for me.

The V4 manual, pages 244-248 describe a very standard process
for sending stereo, mono, or multi-channel signals to outboard gear,
and returning to the signal path, with latency measurement and compensation options.
There are no defaults supplied, you select and configure everything along the way.
Don't know how long this has been the case,
I got the manual in March 2017.
Cheers

Just try it, I'm not talking about outboard gear, no need to complicate the issue. It sends pre pan, it's by design.

Are Paul and X42 open to adding the capability you need?
I've got a Mixbus track with Synthmaster going to a wine-reaper hosting a phaser,
and also to a rakarrack for multi-effecting, and back again, so it has it's uses
as a simple send-return. But I do a lot of layering, and almost no panning.

Re: Mixbus 4 for $29.95 til Nov. 5th
It's nothing to do with Paul, it's mixbus crippling ardour capabilities for whatever reason they think. Personally, I don't know how anyone can do a proper mix with it, creating aux buses and expecting them to receive the panning from the original track (or at least controlling whether it does or not) is a pretty basic thing in any daw. For example, you are mixing some vocals, backing vocals panned left and right, you want to send it to a reverb bus but the aux bus you created for this receives the vocals centered. Having the reverb on the dedicated mixbus buses means that you can't send from one to another (want some reverb on that delay? You have to use another reverb instance on the delay bus).
I have a theory as to why they intentionally do this but I'll keep that to myself.
