No sound output via jack

Hi all,
I am currently struggling with getting drumgizmo working standalone on the command line. My MIDI notes do get registered by it ("Event key:47 vel:77" et cetera), yet I cannot hear any sound.
Other audio generators (e.g. hydrogen) output sound as expected when all connections are set via qjackctl.
My MIDI input consists of jack-keyboard currently - could it be an issue with the selected MIDI channel/bank/program (I have not yet understood how drumgizmo maps those values, currently all set to 1 - I already fuzzed those around) or with the fact that I needed to reduce the number of instruments in the .xml-file due to memory constraints since I am running it on a Raspberry Pi?
Redirecting the output of drumgizmo to a wavfile and playing that works fine - so I guess it's a simple configuration-problem.
