Has anyone found a reasonable audio Hat for the Pi with acceptable input and output. All the ones I see are output only.

An audio HAT with high quality input would have to send this audio data to the Pi via the GPIOs. So even if a HAT had built-in high quality ADCs, it would have to stream the digital audio data to the Pi via the GPIOs. Without having looked at the schematics, I guess the GPIOs just aren't made for streaming. Why don't you just use a USB audio interface?

I do. But it would be nice to have a more compact solution than a clunky extra box with a power supply.

I also wondered if a hat would give better latency.

I can get near realtime latency with the external USB box I use. As I use guitarix on the RPi, latency is unacceptable. I can get it to run guitarix xrun free with a guitarix latency of 64. That requires a Real time kernel though, and some tweaking.

I haven't done extensive testing with mine yet, but the Audio Injector (surround version kickstarter was posted earlier) is a decent 2 in 2 out hat which can do 128 sample latency without performance tweaking. Its available on ebay or amazon. There is also one with midi i/o that looks promising at http://blokas.io/ but it seems to be in eternal testing.

The pisound seems like the ticket for a compact solution. As much as I could figure from their blog, the final design is now made, and they are crowdfunding the next batch of boards. It really looks nice. With jack stereo input and output, 48k,96 and 192kHz, 24 bit gain control, volume control and MIDI in and out, it seems like the perfect match for music production.
The Audio injector(s) look interesting too. The Octo particularly with its 8in, 8 out balanced option.
