Is there a Hydrogen type of app, but for bass?

Post by Aleks »

Wouldn't that be nice, to have a pattern-oriented sampler for bass, with a layout similar to Hydrogen? I think I can already use Hydrogen for that, but first, I don't know if I can control the length of the notes, and second, loading a drum kit and a set of bass samples would be quite cumbersome and heavy on the app?!

Or maybe there is some similar program that I am not aware of...

I feel like sequencer64 (or the older seq24) is exactly that. It doesn't load the samples but you drive something like linuxsampler or a synth with it and its great. https://github.com/ahlstromcj/sequencer64

I tried to install Seq64, but I get "config.status: error: cannot find input file: `Makefile.in'".

Hydrogen is a sequencer. It's more specifically designed for drums and that makes it more limited, not the opposite. You would be better off using a regular sequencer for what you want. AFAIK, all DAWs have their own sequencer.

Yes. It's what just about any DAW can do for you.

Yes again.

Hydrogen lets you make kits, so you might have multiple sets of bass samples,
in one kit, different sounds as desired, but using the same group of notes in a bass line.
A good option in some cases, and hydro has some excellent effects options
in it's box.

You might want to look at Redux, it is a plugin, can multisample, save as patches/kits, has a phrase editor, essentially a pattern sequencer, which you can trigger from your daw.

You could also try Nekobi from DISTRHO-ports, which is a 303-based synth.

In order to use Hydrogen as a sequencer, you just have to make an audio file (in FLAC, for example) with no audio at all, but long enough for the notes you will need. Save that file, and load it into Hydrogen as a new kit. Then you can connect your bass to it. :)

(I had the same question myself, years ago, so I know it works..)

in theory, any step sequencer + any sampler. you even could load your bass samples right into hydrogen.

in practice, it will never work completely the same, because bass notes do have length, even if it's very small, unlike drum notes that are one-shot by their nature, and it's common for drum machines/modules to ignore Note Off messages due to this fact.

not quite that, since it does not operate with samples.

True but you can always feed a sampler with the outcoming midi. The sequencer part is made for bass parts.

Why then not do all within LMMS or in Ardour which both can handle all?
Indeed, good point. Anyhow, I can see point for using Hydrogen, beacause it has drum-specific humanizer, which can make your beats more real drummer like.

That is where I started, and if it would have real-audio recording & editing, I might still be using only it! :-)

Slowly learning other tools also.
